VW Golf FSI: New fuel save world record!

Our sibling "The German Car Blog" already reported about the Fuel Challenge, a world record attempt to drive around the world with less than 25 fuel fill-ups.
And now, it's finally done: after 78 days Helen and John Taylor arrived back in London with using only 24 fill-ups for 28970 kilomters. Congrats for that!

Amazing. Well done to VAG.

Reminds me of the Top Gear challenge with the Audi A8 diesel... :sly:

That's awesome. Kudos to VAG and the drivers. :)

I want to know how one drives around the world in a Golf, I'm pretty sure a guy with a hopped up and lifted Mercedes didn't have the easiest time in the world. I would like to see a picture of this said Golf. Unless they used a boat to ship the car to different countries and from there they drove around to the next boat. Still a good feat, but by no means nearly as impressive as the guy that drove in the Mercedes a few years back.

...How big is the FSI engine? I belive the only engine we will be getting in the Golf will be the 2.5L I5, as the 2.0L 8V I4 has FINIALLY been retired here in the US.

i roughly...very roughly tried to figure it out and ended up with 52 miles per gallon or 22 kilometers per liter

So the Golf was using Diesel. I wonder what kind of gas mileage would a hybrid get just for comparison. 👍

I think it was a 1.6 FSI petroel engine.

Average 4.48 l/100 km... in a standard Golf 1.6 FSI.

Edit.. yep it was indeed a petroel car and not diesel.

Thats some great economy, seems like lean burn direct injection petrol technology is working out well. :)
