And they HAVE to be able to work well say when I am using a riding lawn mower that is quite loud...

I know nothing about what to buy and what there is to know about this but any help greatly appreciated :)

Isolation > Noise cancelation

IEMs would be much better suited for "work" phones, because they are light and unobtrusive. Full size headphones are bulky and heavy, and they are not something you want to wear around outside.

Search the forums of head-fi.org and you will find tons of threads full of suggestions and recommendations on this subject.

Are these for noise blocking only?
If so, you need a good to excellent earplug, augmented by a good set of earmuffs.

If you are looking for a good to excellent set of cans for listening to music.
Hit musician's friend, or one of the other sites that sells recording gear, and get yourself a set of Sennheisers. Just about any model.

I have a set of Sennheiser HD 201's. They cover your whole ear, have great sound quality, and would block out a fair bit of sound. They've also got a long cable from the headphone jack to the headphones. Pretty sure they cost $50. Great reviews too.

I also believe there are some good Sony ones out there, ranging from $170-$299.95 (AUSD)
