Good video compression software?

I have a fair amount of videos that are quite large that I want to reduce in size. Are there any known trustworthy programs out there that I will be able to rely on that anybody knows?

Thanks for the heads up. My harddrive was suffering from all the file sizes.

Be warned, Handbrake will take a long time unless you have a fast CPU or an Intel CPU with hardware-accelerated encoding via Quick Sync. Otherwise it might be worth it to invest in something like DVDFab. Is there are alot of videos? Usually the answer is to just buy more hard drive space.
