My sister got me a laptop from her work. It's a Windows 98, but it won't load in NORMAL. It would only load and work in SAFE MODE. I pop in a Windows XP CD, but it doesn't read it. It has 64mb of RAM and has a 4.0GB of Hard Drive...Is there any way to get the PC to work in normal?? It say Computer Protection Error, or something like that. Then it says please restart PC. I did that over 100 times in a matter of 2 hours...Please Help if you can...

XP won't run on anything less than 256MB RAM, and even if you have that, you shouldn't, it would be unbearably slow.

Try re-installing Windows 98, or maybe re-installing with Windows 2000. You're going to probably need to format.

Yeah, I don't know how to get Windows 2000...and how would I install Windows 98 over?? The PC didn't even come with a charger...So what I just did make a new user, now I got into Normal Mode...

I agree, format wouldn't hurt. Just a thought, ever thought about installing Linux on that? (I don't know much about Linux but I just recently installed Ubuntu on my old Windows 98SE machine.) You can probably find a good Linux distribution that will run on very low computer specs.

Well, I might buy a 256MB RAM for the laptop, and then get a $100, 100GB External Hard Drive. But then the problem would be, I have no more USB Ports on the laptop, and I also have no Ethernet ports, what's a good thing to do then so I can get the internet working. There's also no telephone jack in the laptop either :(

Dude, it's a free laptop.

Sell it and help fund something that isn't ancient.

I'll give you $10 for it.

It'll install on 64MB of RAM, ands runs as well as 2000 would, if not better (although that isn't saying much).

So sell it and get something newer.
