Got PS3 controller recognized by computer but...how do I use it to play games?

I got my computer to recognize the controller but now I just can't really figure out how to get it to work on any games (some being as old as Quake 1 and Unreal 1, also some newer like Battlefield 2 and Half Life 2)

I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge to get this controller to work on PC games?

I tried the directions but I cant get it to work. Vista 64-bit. Its back to my original PSone controller.
