The Italian Grand Prix of 1971 was won by 0.01 seconds, although the timing was only accurate to 2 decimal places. The first 5 cars finished within 0.61 seconds. With an average speed of 150.75 mph this was also the fastest race in F1 for many years until the 2003 Italian Grand Prix.

2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Dodge Dealers 400 at Darlington.

Official margin of victory-0.002 seconds. It looks closer due to blur and the slower speed.

Congrats to Mr. Dempsey, an impressive feat reguardless what is closer.

Digital timing and scoring. The technology has come a long way, but I'd bet they could measure further if it was practical.

It even made the sports highlights on my local news. I was pissed to have missed it because I had an eye exam around that time. But man, what a finish that was!

I was actually thinking about all of the top 4 within a car length, not just how close the top 2 were...:sly:

Logan Gomez and Alex Lloyd at Chicagoland in Indy Lights, 2007.

Margin of victory: 0.0005.

Edit: Also, from 2011:

Hector Faubel was awarded victory on a tie-break in a remarkable photo finish to the Sachsenring 125cc race.

The Aspar rider, who returned to 125cc this year after three seasons in 250cc/Moto2, crossed the line in an exact dead heat with Johann Zarco (Ajo).

The duo could not be separated on the timing screens or on video replays, but Faubel became the official victor by virtue of having set a faster race lap than Zarco.

Results - 27 laps:

Pos Rider Team/Bike Time/Gap
1. Hector Faubel Aspar Aprilia 39m57.979s
2. Johann Zarco Ajo Derbi + 0.000s
3. Maverick Vinales Blusens Aprilia + 0.272s
