366hp? Awesome. 👍

But what the hell is with this?

Now, according to the car connection, this is a test mule for the next EVO X. Doubt it, at this point I think this could have been the FQ-360.

"We've seen Mitsubishi's Concept-X, giving us a very good indication as to what the future Lancer-based Evo X will look like. But here are the first pictures of an Evo X mule running at speed at the Nuerburgring inGermany.
The new Evo X will share a platform with the new Dodge Caliber, Mitsubishi's Outlander and Chrysler's next-generation PT Cruiser.

With over 300 horsepower, the Evo X will be powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged MIVEC 2.0-liter engine, mated to a six-speed clutchless transmission. Other features include steering-wheel paddle-shift controls, and an improved AWD system."

Ok, so obviously this isn't going to be the next EVO X but what is it anyway?

:(

*Crosses fingers hoping a proper conventional manual will also be available*

Regarding the Evo in general. There's something I've never completely understood or just kind of assumed.

What's the rationale of not bringing the various FQ-3##s to the US. I think my assumption is that somehow it fails to meet US environmental regulations. But as I'm thinking about it now, is it because of the grades of gas (petrol) vary between Europe and the US.

I dunno, this is just something that I've always wondered. Mainly because, if Europe has had five different models in the past few years, how come the US has only had one.

**And yes I know that we get the RS/IX/MR. But same engine... So I'm calling it one.

The FQ's are done by Mitsubishi/Ralliart Europe (or UK not sure) specially for the Euro market, its up to Mitsubishi US to upgrade the Evo's for the US market I guess.

@ GT Pro: There are several test-mules that are baisically Exo IX's with the Evo X running gear beneath them. Car and Driver and Motor Trend BOTH got to test the new prototype models, and although they can't offically come away with any soild information, they said there was definately a difference between it and the Evo IX.

@ other stuff: We do have an American arm to the Ralliart parts supplier, so theoretically you should be able to build your own version of the FQ-360 for less money, but I cannot be completely certain of that.

Americans dont need rallyart. All you guys need tyo do is fit a new exhaust and remap the ECU and you will get 370+ out of it fairly easy. In the UK we now get, 95ron,98 ron,99 ron, 102ron and 108ron from certain gas stations. 102ron is £2.70 per liter though.

In the UK the family man will get the STI, and the bachelor will spring for the Evo, because the evo is alot more track orientated and can handle higher power easier, and is cheaper to tune, although more expensive to run by a fair bit.

Lets see, our premium fuel (98 Octane, I don't know what that works out to in the UK) is selling for about $3.20 an American gallon, so about $3.84 for a British gallon of gasoline. So while you are paying the equal of £12.15 per British gallon for the high-octane stuff, were still getting away with it at £2.09 per British gallon.

...Maybe my calculations are wrong, I don't know, but thats crazy that you are paying six-times as much as we are for what is baisically the same stuff.

You what??? The Familly man is far more likely to get a Vectra. Not many Family men own Imprezas or Evo's.

I can think of one time I've seen a kid in an STi here in the US, and it was sitting in the dealer's showroom.

But the tought of a booster-seat/car-seat for a kid in the back of an STi is quite funny...

lol you know what I mean, if a family man wants a car with some serious oomph, bite and track warrior capabilities he will get the impreza

Yes, you'll get 370HP "easily" and then tow your evo to the dealer to explain just how you managed to need a new engine. The FQ-340 has a thoroughly rebuilt engine and transmission before being sold.

Er, wait. I was thinking of the FQ-450. I still don't think it's got that much of a lifespan at 370HP. 185HP/L is hard on any engine, no matter how it's made.

...NISMO seems to be able to sell their specialty models quite easily, but of course theirs are a bit different than any of the FQ-series models...

Yeah in the UK its 4500, but thats just to top up the oil in the thing that makes evos handle and corner so well. I forgot the name of it now :dunce:

But I think with the Evo 9 GT that turning gadget isnt installed, so customers dont have to get it serviced as often but instead something like every 10,000miles

Back when my father and I went out to go look at the origional Evo VIII here in the US, the guy at the dealer was telling me the tires would have had to been replaced about every-other oil change. Thats what you get when you buy those quasi-slick Advans...

If I'm remembering things right, most Nismo models are suspension-oriented modifications, with only slight engine tuning changes. The Nismo's that put out 400HP+ were Skyline's, whose (heavily modified) engine is much less stressed than a 4G63 at that output level.

My favorite Nismo, the R34 GT-R Z-Tune, was practically totally rebuilt top to bottom, crank to cams, and even then 500HP from 2.6L is...um, still high at 192HP/L. But the point is that it was totally rebuilt, and heavily strengthened.

The Z2 engine in the production Z-tune is a 2.8L not 2.6.

Paddle-Shift...I love that word when it comes to transmission talk. 👍 I am hoping this new EVO will help bring out the marketing of paddleshift up like how Volkswagen is doing with their DSG.

I doubt it though. Mitsubishi, I assume, doesn't have the funding to produce a masterpiece of engineering like that. Hell, even GM won't do it yet, so that leaves VAG, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati and possibly Porsche to be building sequential-manual transmissions.
