I bought a PS3 recently in the anticipation of GT5 coming out soon. The only actual full video game that I own for the system is GT5: Prologue. I haven't played many new games since FFXII in 2006 for the PS2. So, I've been sampling the demos at the Playstation Store to get back up to speed and I came across God of War III. I've never played any of the games in this franchise and I have decided that I really like its gameplay (and of course its graphics). I'll have to go and purchase the God of War Collection before I get GOWIII.

What I noticed about the gameplay, and the idea of the character Kratos, seems to be inspired by the PSone game "Wild 9," which was released in September 1998. Has anybody in this forum played that game? I thought it was a unique idea and a rather fun game when I had it when I was younger.

A distinct similarity that I noticed was that Kratos in GOW has blades of fire that stretch out to kill enemies. Wex in Wild 9 had an electrical rig that reached out to electrify and torture enemies.

Does anyone know if people that used to work at Shiny are now working at Santa Monica Studios? Have any of the developers at Santa Monica speak of this game as an idea? Or did I just notice a coincidence?

Haven't heard of this game before, but I don't recall this game being mentioned as the inspiration and to my knowledge, I don't recall David Parry as part of the staff. I'm thinking its more of a coincedience that they share the same idea with the weapon.

You will find many similarities between God of War and many other games, because it is a hack n slash action adventure game. Some accused it of taking stuff from Devil May Cry, although to be honest hack n slash games are mostly the same. I mean, you have light or heavy attacks and maybe some form of magic spells and/or power objects. Oh, and I forgot pre-rendered animations of powerful moves that are all started by "Press X not to die" commands, otherwise known as quick time events (QTE). Everything else is where the differences shine.

What God of War brought to the table was amazing polish and detail that set it at the top of the genre. Even the QTEs feel more fluid than any other game, not completely removing you from the immersion. No one who has been around long enough to be called an adult by law will claim God of War is original, but most everyone will tell you that it does what it does better than anyone else in the genre.

Since this generation of consoles went so long without a GOW title every hack n slash is being called a GOW clone: Heavenly Sword (GOW with a girl), Bayonetta (GOW with a witch), Darksiders (GOW with a Judeo-Christian perspective), and Dante's Inferno (GOW with...OK it IS a clone) are all ones that come to mind immediately.

And a quick look around the genre will tell you that a melee weapon with range, like a blade on a chain, that creates cool looking spinning animations is also not a new concept. Heck, it is practically a requirement.

Sorry to be so long winded. Since you hadn't played any of the GOW games before I just wanted to give you proper perspective so that you won't be wondering too much on where various parts are inspired from.

Thanks for the answer, FoolKiller. I wasn't aware that there were so many new games available that featured the same style of gameplay.

There are tons, but I suggest sticking to God of War for purchases and just renting the others, or downloading their demos, since the quality of other titles can be hit or miss.
