(Sorry for my badly edited Pic above)

Hello and welcome to my GT6 vs GT5 Damage Thread, today i will compare the damages we had before on GT5 to what we have now on GT6.

Visual Damage in GT (not counting the mechanical damage as it was introduce back on GT2) was first appeared on Gran Turismo 5 as a new feature towards realism, However The damage was depending on which car is so if we took a Standard Quality Vehicle then the damage would be far less effected than what if you took a Premium one. Damages were things like from body shape changes to dents to some dark gray-ish Scratches to bumpers which started to hanging over a bit but for cars like WRC Rally Cars, Nascars and the Blitz Dunlop ER34 Skyline '07, the damages were much more extreme to the point were the Bonnet and the Boot starts to open based on the Level of the road and/or when filping over and such..etc and some of these cars even had their door hanging off which makes the car slower than usual until it falls off which then you could get the speed back (also you get one of Gran Turismo 5 trophy's which is called "watch out falling objects" for getting the door's off your car). Some People claimed that the damage gets more and more extreme with Leveling up but many people denied this.

The Visual Damage had returned in Gran Turismo 6 but there were quite a change on it, The Damage were Toned down a lot, the car's body won't change shape after a major crash, No Bonnet open after too much damage, No doors will fall off. It feels like How Grand Theft Auto IV car Damage compared to Grand Theft Auto V except for the fact while GTA V car damage is possible to make heavy damage if you made the train hit you for dozens of times, GT6 damage is impossible to make something heavy. All the damage GT6 is some bunch of scratches (it's still better than those Ugly dark Gray "scratches" from GT5 which is the only good thing about GT6 visual damage), Also you might see that the damage has a some dents which if you look closely it's actually some illusions to make you feel like it's dented which is not at all (still an okay feature for me but i would prefer more real looking dents).

I mean Visual and Mechanical Damage in Both GT5 and GT6 aren't that good compare to other Racing simulator games but man they really gone some steps back with Down grading the damages at GT6. I don't know why, maybe because Car manufacturers don't want their cars to be shown damaged which in that case i have no problem with it as it's the manufacturer problem not PDI.

I guess i had to leave you discuss with each other, See what the difference with these 4 same car compared in both GT5 and GT6 and decided which one is better.

(sorry if some images were too dark or too light, that's because i captured GT5 screen shots on my Old 2009 LG LCD TV while GT6 Screen Shots are from my brand new LG LED Smart TV). Also most GT5 Screenshots are X1 (only few were X2) as it takes too much time while all Screenshots are X2 in GT6 because it takes far less time.

The reason why i didn't add anything other than GT5 and GT6 on the vote is because we all know that users will vote "both are bad", project cars, froza..etc is better so i just made it far, i don't want it to end up getting 2 GT 5 vote, 1 GT 6 vote and 83+ vote on "both were bad".

EDIT: Some Random GT5 Screenshots (Thanks @alexnipi for these images)

I still don't get, why PD didn't eventually implement this damage system (and dem sparks) into GT5 or GT6... I mean, they already had it programmed...

When I first saw this I was so happy they got it right... Well... Of course it didn't make it in the final GT5...

(This demo was exclusively playable in Best Buy stores few months before GT5 was released)

Showing damage, especially on multiple cars, takes computing power. In order to go from 1280x1080 in GT5 to 1440x1080 (IIRC) in GT6, they needed to take away things like the visual damage in order to free up resources. That's my theory anyway.

Are you kidding me? It didn't even make it in GT5, running the same resolution as the demo was.

A demo isn't a full game though. There's more in the full game than there is in a demo and obviously they had to tone it down for the full release to help maintain frame rates and get the desired resolution. It's an old system, it's a miracle you got any damage at all really.

Probably because it was glitchy as all hell. Look at the various panels of the car all going through each other. The bumpers unhinging was a nice touch, and I can't remember if GT5 had that, but overall it looked very far from finished.

Well I remember GT5 damage very well and it this demo was far superior in terms of damage.

Even if the damage was glitchy, why did they remove the sparks from retail GT5? They look totally astonishing.

I'd rather they didnt bother with damage at all. It isnt required and when possible i turn it of. Mechanical damage is welcome, but visual is a waste of time, unless the damage is going to affect the car, like aero disturbance etc

Why is visual needed if we want aero disturbance? They can change the aerodynamics of a car without changing its shape.

In fact, cars aren't required to even look like cars in order to handle like cars. Just make blocks that represent them!

(i actually think visual damage is an important part of making a game look real. racing/driving sims are supposed to look real)

Cars don't get damaged in Spain when they drive and crash at 300 km/h?
No, because we never crash.

But seriously, realistic visual damage simulation is something useless, that is hard to implement, and would take a lot of PD resources. They better focus on more important stuff, like the course creator, and a lot of other things.

Lack of enough skill to drive a car without crashing here and there
Mmmmm...never heard of it:sly: To answer your question, I'm a fan of realistic damage physics I can take or leave the appearance of physical damage. However, I can see how people would like it in a game like this.

You see, the point of driving and racing is not crashing, but going as fast as possible. Crashing is something that no driver wants to think, or wants to talk about. Its the dark side of racing and honestly I dont think good drivers would ever have the desire of wrecking their cars.
Anyway if youre such a fan of damge I suggest you drop GT and try Burnout.
Damage is a part of racing.

It's like you said programming of being spotted in a stealth game is not important.
Damage is part of racing, but realistic visual damage is difficult to implement in GT, and unnecessary.

PD don't know how to model damage properly and Gran Turismo doesn't need it therefore they should just leave it alone and focus on other aspects of the game.

VBR
Damage is awful in both games, just in different ways.

This is exactly what I was going to post.

Damage in GT5 is awful. The cars often just look melted, and there's a reasonable proportion of glitches that look horrible.

Damage in GT6 is pathetic. It's just textures applied to the car, there's no deformation at all. It's barely acceptable for low levels of damage where only scrapes would be apparent anyway, and completely incapable for anything above that. It's a half-arsed solution to something that should be a basic part of any modern racing game.

I voted GT5 because sometimes, if you're lucky, it can be kind of OK. But actually, I'd like to vote for both games being terrible and PD should go back to the drawing board on damage.
