Gran Turismo has always held a somewhat awkward position between "video game" (a casual diversion) and "driving simulator" (a reproduction of real racing/driving with an emphasis on reality).

Gran Turismo Academy blurs the line between casual diversion ("game") and real-world occupation ("race driver") all the more by providing top-players with the chance to become pro-drivers. Especially over the last few years, it feels that Polyphony Digital has increasingly focused on integrating realistic opportunities (such as the Academy) for users and perhaps decreasingly focused on more traditional "video game" content such as the career mode.

How does Polyphony Digital try to maintain a balance between providing realistic, simulator-type challenges for users seeing GT and GT Academy as a possible step towards becoming professional drivers and providing fantasy content for casual gamers simply looking to unwind by playing with their dream cars? In other words, if we were to imagine a continuum with traditional video game content at one end and full-fledged racing programs (such as Skip Barber) on the other, where would Gran Turismo sit? Where do you see the franchise moving in the future?
