According to the news page:

Yamauchi wanted to implement a “free roam” gameplay mode in GT5, where players could drive around, respecting speed limits and obeying traffic laws, and even exit the car to walk around and explore the environment on foot.

So...essentially, GT5's ultimate vision is a racing game with MMO and RPG elements...so...an MMORPG...racing game. I think, if done right, it could be really fun. But, what do you guys think?

I don't think you could ever implement this in a correct way. I think it looks good on paper, but I could see it being a really bad game.

Would love to drive to the track, for a race day etc. It would be so hard and take so much resources to do it, it wont happen. They need to take a leaf out of the money monster that is World of Warcraft's book. The ammount of people they employ, the effort it takes to reach that level is massive.

PD are just not big enough to pull it off, imo. Not yet anyway.

I think it would pull GT a new dimension of fun. Keep it simple so the die hards don't have to mess around with it.

I always did want to have like an HD Burnout, with legit traffic laws. No sarcasm here. I love free driving in racing games.

Man, I don't think there could be anything cooler than jumping in my rig, straping on the harness and driving to an event...so long as I can clutch kit and go sideways the whole way there ^_^

respecting speed limits and obeying traffic laws

Respect speed limits and obey traffic laws? I don't even do that in real life why would I want to do that in a game. If there's a free roam, if I can't go 200mph through a 30mph zone then I wouldn't bother with it. :grumpy:

There was a racing RPG, with a story, made by squaresoft called RACING LAGOON. That game had the elements of equippable equipment through engine swaps, tires, drivetrain changes, etc. through battles won on the free roam city map. It was extremely fun, actually.

GT has always been a car RPG, and technicly GT5 is evolving into a MMORPG, with the constant online updates we will get to add new content and gameplay features. Its has enough depth to last a few years, thats for sure.

Right. GT5 especially with the B-spec drivers, leveling system and all that. It does sound like it's natural progression at this point, as it get more and more realistic and adds more features, that it will become an MMORPG. It will not technically be the first, as TDU is really an MMORPG, but, I think GT would either feel a bit MORE like an MMORRG or bit LESS like one. I guess, eventually...maybe with the PS4, we'll see.

Ohhh memories I think I still got that game actually lol.

I really worry about Kaz sometimes.
This.

I mean, free roam? Okay, that's somewhat cool if you want to show of your car or something, but, dunno, it doesn't seem like something I want to do in a racing game.

But having a more in-depth community'mode' with the proper graphical represantation might be nice. For those of you who are familiar with World of Warcraft, a mode that's like the capital cities in WoW.
You can do most of the shopping/tuning/interacting with other players/posing there and acces the tracks and race events from there as well. Either by sending your B-Spec drivers or attending yourself.

Would be WAY easier on the hardware as well.

It would be sweet if we got big package updates and didn't lose all our work. PD needs a mmorpg game structure consultant, bigtime.

way too rpg like then..
i hate rpgs:(

That's what makes you think it's too much like an rpg? It's not the levels or the grinding?

Anyways free roam would be pretty neat. Just a large free roam level people can join online. Keep everything else but that could be something cool to take a break and just cruise around. That's what I would use it for anyway.

I have bought every GT game since the original, and haven't stopped playing GT5 since I got it on release day. I wouldn't buy GT6 if it turned into an MMORPG.

Same here. That's why I just recently bought Midnight Club: LA (Complete Edition), and it's awesome.

PGR4 had a (free) DLC where you could free roam the city's and others in the game (online only), such as New York, Las Vegas, and St. Petersberg. GT5 could have the same concept being able to free roam in such as Tokyo, London, and Rome.

What I would do is this, make a RACING game with GT6 (LMP's, Group C's, GT1-4, F1-GP3, WRC and Karting). With all the other cars (except NASCAR) add other cars aswell, make a TDU-like game, something to add to PD's locker.

For the setting, I would like PD to create a fantasy land, with a city, the out-skirts and countryside. I'd also like mountain roads ect.

Sounds like Kaz may be getting old... GT needs more natural evolution, not a completely different direction... That's a different game called TDU and they have a huge head start...

It depends but if PD implement it well (like Test Drive) then it could be great game. But they should leave out following the rules of the road because that will get boring (Unless the area is like the German Autobahns :D)

More realistic? let's see..

1) artificial level system
2) licenses not required for race series
3) Dealerships that won't let you spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on their product until you reach a certain 'level'
4) Expensive desireable cars that you cannot sell
5) 'Races' with no restricions on entry
6) 'Races' in which the leader starts 25 -45 seconds in front of the last place
7) 'Races' you can only win the prize for once
8) gearboxes you can't tune
9) paint you can't buy
10) brakes you can't modify

Forgive me for saying so, but GT5 is the least realistic GT ever produced.

oh and...

NO!

Eh... I dunno. I could see them making the online experience better with better lobbies, more options, and maybe an auction/trading house. On the other hand, I want GT5 to be about cars and racing, not walking around a virtual country club. I can tell you that if buying and upgrading cars gets any more cumbersome players will not be happy.
