Would you guys be in favor of downloadable software supplied from Polyphony Digital to do in-depth track and livery design on your computer? You could actually design tracks (rather than generate them), and simply transfer them to the PS3. Get a patch for the game to recognize and interpret the file and load your track into the game, and you're golden.

Same would go with the livery editor, but that would take virtually no memory at all. Choose which car you're designing, then a template and preview is laid out once you go to work on it. Even the most complex designs could be compressed to the size of a few paint chips when saved to be placed in the game.

It just seems to me that they could've saved a ton of disk space by having these unnecessary features as options. Being able to design your own course and livery would be DLC worth paying for. Not to mention being able to share and 'sell' your creations for credits in GT5. So what do you guys think?

Is this on the cards or are you dreaming of it?

Dreaming, but I foresee this as a viable idea since developers are confined to disks on this generation of consoles.

It would be great yes, same as fitting wheels to standards but i dont think it will happen. Kaz or anyone else from PD has never mentioned it and im sure they have been asked millions of times about it.

Seeing as we have Spa (and hopefully more in future) a Series generator would be nice...

Not sure if we can really rule out anything... the content/features PD introduces will be largely (if not completely) influenced by whatever Turn 10 decides to implement. Before Forza 4's release, they really didn't have any incentive to make major changes. It's no coincidence that we get 2.0 and DLC upon the competitions launch.

I dont think anything turn10 do influences PD. Kaz runs his own race.

Although it would be nice, its highly open for abuse by those immature players, and you know what i mean.

People would abuse it. I think NASCAR 2010 had something like this where you had to download some software thing from ea sports. It was cool because you could design your own car but of course there where immature people abusing it.

The timing was, obviously, marketing, but I don't think Kaz is that heavily influenced by Turn 10, for better or for worse.

There are also people who abuse the ability to make their own player emblem in Black Ops. Select their name, report inappropriate player emblem. This could easily be added in GT5.

The problem with a track creator is once again licensing issues. To have this in the game PD/Sony would have to police it like they have LittleBigPlanet. If it gets reported for copyright infringement, they just take it down without doing any research if it is actually copying something/anything. I would rather not spend 5+ hrs on a track only to have some prick get a pin in his butt and always report my stuff as a copy infringement as Sony/PD wouldn't actually take the time to research.

I've mentioned before that I would rather have a Livery Editor than the current track generator. I understand a few reasons why PD designed the track editor the way they did... people would most likely recreate originals and real world tracks - thus future DLC would be compromised. Then you have the standard "landscaping" perspective on it as well, but I'm pretty sure the only thing stopping PD from giving us a 100% customizable track designer has to do with it compromising DLC (and liscensing as the poster states above). Same with liveries. Anything user created or designed could potentially effect DLC, which is why we'll probably never see 100% full reign on these things, and I don't blame PD or Sony and it doesn't make GT better or worse.

GT has never needed a livery editor, I've stated this many times. Much like the track editor, I don't think either would do or does anything to the game. The focus of Gran Turismo is driving simulation not cars with giant pink Playboy bunnies or gold pot leaves all over it. This is the major difference between Forza and GT, now that I think about it. GT is all about the big picture and depends on the small details to execute it, while Forza focuses less on that and more on features to bring together the best value pack for the dollar.

But I don't want to reduce this thread to yet another Forza vs. GT arguement, but when people think that GT should copy from Forza - that is just laughable.

You're right, that's not what it's all about. But they started designing this series in 1992 and we're still stuck with the same upgrade/design system. The only improvements that have been made in 20 years are a couple of bolt on aero kits for select cars, a poorly thought out paint system, and the ability to change wheel design. Not cool.

Colors and designs don't affect it as a simulator, I get that. It's already the best simulator available on any console, but people seem to forget it is still a game as well. Need for Speed, Grid, Forza, Test Drive, Midnight Club... all of them give you the ability to sticker up your car. GT5 doesn't need visual customization as a simulator, it needs it as a game.

I like the concept, as I think the Course Maker was dumbed down because they couldn't afford to put it a better version on a Blu-ray.

We have a track maker. It's not a full on OMG one but it is there. We need one for the cars.

Here's the thing though; in GRID the livery system actually serves a purpose. Quite frankly I can't stand the livery editor in Need for Speed Shift. It's tedious, the selection of decals isn't very good (where are the actual auto manufacturers?), and it's time consuming. It's just not fun to use. I don't know how to make it more fun, but I don't want to sit there and have to rotate a racing stripe back and forth until it looks like it's on straight.

So being able to something like this:

or this:

doesn't interest anyone??
wow, I figured being able to personalize your car beyond just a solid paint color would appeal to everyone.
Yeah your gonna get the people with the 12 yr old mentality (and believe me it's not just kids) that wanna do the "expletive deleted" thing but that is easy to police and Forza does a rather good job at it in my book.

Doing something like putting a preloaded Ford Racing logo on a car is one thing. I just really don't care enough to take the time to put my own design into the game. It really doesn't do anything, and it's time consuming and tedious.

And if the only reason why people want it is to make the game "like Forza", then I say stop right there.

A GT design suite is the kind of thing I dream about. Imagine, being able to have a vision for a livery or track design, and take it to the game in a hour or so. I would gladly pay $15 for it. I would love to be able to make point-to-point tracks, like hill climbs and drag strips, or giant 20+ mile test courses.

Shift had the worst vinyl editor of any game I've ever played. I'm talking something closer to what Midnight Club had:

This was a stock yellow Corvette when I started. I made a C5R replica within a few hours (had to keep cross-checking with the actual one), and it was pretty easy because there are actual tools in the editor. Cut, copy, paste, masking, transparency, shape, skew, size, color, etc.

Also made a Evo VII RC duplicate with the same system. Granted, I rushed through it, but you get the idea:

A decent program makes for an easy and actually enjoyable experience. I've had tons of fun making vehicles unique and showing them off online, and so have many others. We have all of the logistics in the game, but we don't have anything legitimately artistic.

To clarify on the course editor: you wouldn't be able to do an absolute replica of a real life track. You would still be stuck with a few environments (Paris, Liege, Alaska, Mt. Whatchamacallit), but it would allow one to design each individual turn, course width, elevation, straight length, road material, and surface smoothness. I doubt anyone would have the time or ability to accurately replicate a real life track, as that takes an entire team of people with very precise measurements to accomplish. Would it really affect DLC of new tracks? Doubt it. You could take months and make a replica of Spa, but when you look at what Sony made would you hesitate to spend a little on the genuine article?
