I am fairly new to the sim racing world. I started just last year with a PS4 and GT Sport and F1 2019. I now have a PC setup. I wonder if there is a PC game like Gran Turismo.
What I am after is the "challenges" and "master the track" or what they were called . It really taught me quite a bit about driving and I liked the way you could have small goals and work towards them.
I don't really care about multiplayer, career, championships etc. I have other games/sims that can do them.

Thanks

The closest thing to Gran Turismo on the PC in terms of the games formula, buy a car, earn Cr, buy anothre car etc. is Forza Motorsport 7 which is available in the Windows Store. If you're just after a realistic game to fine tune settings and get lap records then Assetto Corsa I believe it a good one though I don't own it.

Thank you for your reply. I have FM7 but what I am more after is the "teaching" aspect of Gran Turismo with the "Challenges" and "Master The Track". I also have F12020, iRacing and RaceRoom. I really like RaceRoom but miss the above aspects from Gran Turismo.

You can try Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizone, F1 2020 and Project Cars 2, they are all one PC. All but F1 2020 are less “gamey”(more full on sim than game) than GT though, and harder to be fast in. :)

Also, Welcome to GTP! :gtpflag:

Thank you for you reply. I have F12020, iRacing and Raceroom and FM7. While I really like RaceRoom, none of the have the above features I'm looking for unfortunatly.
Welcome to GTP ;p

I suggest Assetto Corsa. There's a lot of mods that can make it come closer to that smooth GT experience.

One of our own members makes these GT inspired videos. Even some of the car mods for Assetto Corsa are taken from GT Sport.

Thanks for your replies but I'm not really after a lot of cars or different cars. What I am looking for is "Challenges" or "Master the track" trainings like GT Sport has.

You’re going to find challenge/master the track type stuff on your own no matter what you play, it’s just that GT Sport does that work for you for how it’s set up. Project CARS 3 has ‘track mastery’ if you will (as in each track has line/corner mastery for each track during races, not just time trials/hot laps). NFS Shift 1 and 2 have a similar feature to that IIRC.

Otherwise, the other games that other users mentioned have free play modes that let you create your own challenges and/or practice the tracks at your own leisure.

What do you mean by "teaching" aspect of Gran Turismo? Are you referring to the license tests? (My last GT game was GT6.) If that's the case, then stick with the GT series.

Assetto Corsa (also available on PS4) does have Time Attack challenges. However, I would encourage you to get the PC version of Assetto Corsa. The modding community is impressive, and you can add hundreds of tracks to the game. AC Ultimate Edition has 20(?) tracks. I have 290 tracks in my game. You can "master the track" to your heart's desire. The game won't have track challenges for the mod tracks that you download and install. So you'll need an internal desire to master the track. There are plenty of Youtube videos (not specific to Assetto Corsa) on mastering a number of tracks. Watch a Youtube video, google the track's lap records, then try to match/beat the record in Assetto Corsa.

AC's driving mechanics are so good that it almost completely offsets the game's total lack of charm.

Gran Turismo - 70% Charm, 30% Driving
AC - 1% Charm, 99% Driving

Am I helping?

Having a group of buddies to race against helps too, or to chase their lap times and visa versa. It helps to create your own challenges. Or chase real world record at tracks. There’s all kinds of ways to challenge yourself. :)

I'm struggling to think of any sim game that copied the GT game design concept on PC before FM7 that was any newer than Sega GT. A few arcade racers, but even those are a decade old now.

@SFredriksson - Wild Card Option; if you don't mind retro graphics & sounds, why not try Gran Turismo 4 on PC via a PS2 emulator. It has tons of content like what you're after (some of the most challenging in any GT game in fact), & you can run it in 4k or whatever res you like, with much better AA than the PS2 original.

Or you could try GT5 on a PS3 emulator...

Assetto Corsa (also available on PS4)

Yes, thank you. That is what one of the features is called. The other one is where you aim for gold on all the tracks, step-by-step.
Does it have these features?

Thank you, perhaps it is a bit to much retro for me :)

Project Cars 2 or 3 may be the best option I guess. It has a lot of game modes.

Does it have the above mentioned features?

I'd say Assetto Corsa Competizione, it's an awesome racing simulator.

Does it have the above mentioned features?

The amount of folks not bothering to read the opening post that mentions very specific requirements is too damn' high.

There's only one correct answer and it's by @Tornado . You might find elements of what you want in various modern sim titles, but zero modern sim titles have this in a similar way altogether. PC3 is probably the closest (but still no cigar). Funnily enough @VBR suggesting to run an actual GT title on the PC is actually your best/only bet.

Or most people came to the same conclusion as Tornado and tried to provide alternate solutions.

@SFredriksson - AC does not have the game design you’re looking for. Stay with the GT franchise if you want those license tests and track section challenges. Or you can consider the options that people provided.

Try pCARS 3. I think it may be the closest to what you’re looking for. I’m kind of like you where I like modes where I can really learn the track and Hot Lap and Pace Setter events in career and online in pCARS 3 allow you to do that. Read about it a bit before jumping in and maybe watch a few videos to see if you like the look of the game, some people don’t.

Your needs are very specific, so not a lot of modern games have this GT style license test/circuit tutorial. The only one close is Assetto Corsa Competizione - it has 3 track medals per track that you can obtain. But it's very simplistic. To get gold you basically just have to drive 4 clean laps (no spin/off track). No corner by corner tutorial.

If you are ok with older games, there are a few options:

GTR2 - old game, has a very good driving school. Probably the closest thing to GT license test.

EA Sport F1 2002 - even older game, also has a driving school but shorter than GTR2's. Obviously cars are limited to F1 only.

Live For Speed - also old, but still getting updates here and there (very slow progress though). Excellent physics, can still hang with modern sims but graphics look dated and most cars are unlicensed models.

Richard Burns Rally - the best rally sim til Dirt Rally came along. Still very good if you can look past the graphics. Lots of mods available but because the game doesn't naturally support it installing it is painful.

Other than that, your best option is probably playing older GT titles via emulation...

Again, thanks to everyone that has responded.
It seems that unfortunately there is no modern games/sim alternatives that gives you the teaching/driving school that I'm after on a PC. I can't really go back to PS4 since I'm quite invested (wheelbase, wheel, tripple screen, PC) on the PC side.

Who knows, maybe there will be in an upcoming title or even the long shot of Gran Turismo on PC.

How about Dirt 4 ? That has quite a lengthy tutorial teaching aspects of Rally driving, different techniques, drivetrains etc.

Yes it's a shame. All of the new sims tend to assume people already have this knowledge, or if not, then there's plenty of resources on the internet that teaches these things.

If you haven't played any of the games I listed, I highly recommend trying them out by the way. Don't let the age/graphics turn you off because they still offer great driving experiences 👍
