Well, what can I say about this crazy race...
Slot 2: A+ Lobby EMEA 278 points!!!
Team Renault
Door: #12
Q: 5th (2:18.943)
Pole was the #4 ranked guy in the world
(In the TT) with an insane 217.579
I only have 52K DR on my account, so I really didn't understand this match making? The top 3 guys in the lobby were over 65K DR, so something wasn't adding up.
The pace from the top 3 guys was evident immediately, and I had to really drive out of my skin to keep up in the first couple of laps. I managed to jump up to 4th and just held off an AMG who was hounding me until lap 5. That's when everything changed.
The rain started half way though the 5th lap, and it looked like it would stay just under the first bar. On the radar, there were patches of dark blue but they were scattered. It was a very hard map to determine what would happen. Because some of the patches would require Wets (If they hit the track) and the light blue would only require Inters.
By the end of lap 6 (currently in 4th) I decided it was way too risky to stay out for another lap and pitted for full wets, even though the bar was just over the first line. The top 3 continued on to lap 7. This was a huge mistake, as by the time I'd left the pits, it was a quarter over the line. Those who came in behind me all put on inters! Which would be the biggest blessing I've ever had in a wet race. I was literally the only driver on full wets.
All I saw toward the end of my outlap (lap 7) was yellow flags galore, as the leaders struggled to keep their cars on the track. By lap 10, the rain was over the second bar and my wets were doing the job required.
It pelted down the whole race and lap after lap I extended my lead, until I was 14 seconds ahead of second place. The rain was relentless, but the Renault was loving it.
Final result. P1 and 278 points! (A season best). Dwarfing my win at Nurb 24 (237 points) That's 3 wins this season Road Atlanta, Nurb 24 and Spa. 2 of them being at A+. The Renault continues to surprise me. I love it! and I'll miss it once the season is over. At least we get to dance one more time, at Watkins Glen. What a great day!
