I think we should take a moment to celebrate the fact that the Honda RA272 is the VERY FIRST vintage F1 car to come to the entire Gt series. Kudos and 'round of applause to PD for making this happen.

Now...I don't have access to my PS4 right now so I haven't had a chance to drive the car in GT7. But I was wondering...how close does the Honda RA272 come to the handling/physics of Grand Prix Legends? Do they drive in a similar fashion? Or are they worlds apart?

Behold....

Exhibit A...the 272 in GPL:

Exhibit B....the 272 in GT7:

Thoughts? Should fans of the car, who drive and loved it in GPL flock to this version?

Distant memory... Playing with Logitech WingMan Formula Force back then,
High-resolution texture patches, exquisite cockpit patches, countless track mods... what a luxury,

The Honda RA272 of GT7, with CH tires, is somewhat similar.
Progressive, smooth, the rear wheel slides slowly to the outside,
The front wheels reverse slightly, tilting the body and sliding through every corner,
carefree!

I don't think it's a fair comparison. You can't compare an officially added car in a modern game, to a fan added mod of a 25 year old game.
Thanks for the impressions guys. Very interesting. @daan ...so wait a second: you labeled it as a "fan added mod to a 25 year old game". Are you saying the car is NOT part of the included default roster of F1 cars in GPL, and is infact, an add-on mod?

The Honda RA300 was in the base game. It was a different model because GPL was based on the 1967 season. Those had much more powerful engines than the '66 cars, so you might be right that it's an unfair comparison. As the GPL video in the OP suggests -- and I can attest to -- all of the GPL cars were really hard to handle. The RA272 doesn't feel like the GPL experience at all, however I don't know how the 272 drove compared to the 300. I don't even know how accurate GPL was at modeling the handling of those cars.

Jackie Stewart said it was harder to drive the cars in GPL than it was the real thing in '67.

It was in a SIM racing online magazine that I doubt still exists.

I don't doubt that! Though I also suspect that the RA272 in GT7 is more forgiving than the real thing.

That sounds plausible, since all the reviews and impressions I've seen on the car suggests it's extraordinarily forgiving, especially for a 60's car with 0 downforce. One reviewer actually listed the amount of grip the 272 has as a complaint lol.

GPL was based on the 1967 F1 season. The RA272 in the video you posted is from the 1965 mod http://65f1.gplworld.de/

The "Honda" in GPL was named as a Murasama (presumably as Papyrus couldn't get the Honda license) and was based on the RA300. The RA300 had a 3 litre engine whereas the RA272 had a 1.5 litre engine as per the engine regulations of the time.

These guys were heroes that they drove F1 cars without any aerodynamic aid!!!
Honda is mainly understearing machine with destabilizing tendencies in braking.

It's pretty well known that the GPL cars, especially with the default setups, were far less forgiving than in real life. A lot of "simracers" just convinced themselves otherwise for years because they wanted to feel superior and thought that "hard was realistic".

Well damn that's interesting.

Dave Kaemmer said GPL tyre physics weren't very good, but it was alot of fun, spent a few years playing that in vroc.

I see. Quite fascinating and thanks for the clarification brother.

Yeah Dave is the man. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to experience the game during those golden years with vroc. But man, would I love to see a dev release a new re-imagined version of GPL, running on a modern engine complete with 4K and VR support. Perhaps they could even persuade Dave to take some time away from working on iracing to get offer a bit of support on a new game.

I missed out on those golden years, wasn't till 2004 I went online, had good fun racing in a couple of leagues. Made a few really good friends who are sadly no longer with us.

To be honest, a bunch of us played around with the car lot in lobbies the first week. We found Sports softs to be the best tires. grip levels were loose, but you could really throttle steer the thing like you could see the drivers doing. Worth a try
TBH I've been downgrading a fair few cars recently from racing to sports soft and prefer the experience. perhaps not as quick but for me its much more fun... throwing cars around in corners more, but not feeling so unstable it felt like driving ice.
