Sweet the new Viper is in this race. Where's Oreca when you need them.
 
i was surprised to see this on tv. i turned to cbs, saw the panoz and was wonderin' what the hell was happenin'. :P
 
CBS has quite a few of these ALMS races on TV this year. I missed it because channel 2, KCBS, didn't come in clear eonough for my HDD recorder to record it. Oh well. At least I caught the Speed GT Series and the Trans Am race. Yesterday I saw the Monaco F1 Decade race and the Grand Am race at Fontana.

What happened to the DBR9s? I haven't been following up on ALMS since Sebring. Did they get kicked out unitl they get the size of their car reduced? I heard their cars were too wide, but were allowed to race in Sebring.
 
Well this year, all of the ALMS races will be televised. Most will be on the Speed Channel, but a couple more will be on CBS.
 
So, what do you think of those pictures? And how about those road cars I spotted in the infield?

The pics of the cars on the track (apologize for the blurriness, need to adjust shutter speed!) are from the Speed Touring Car Challenge early in the morning. Speed channel will show this, and the Speed GT Challenge (which took place after the ALMS race) again on TV if you wanna catch it.

Overall, it was a wonderful race to attend, and very exciting towards the end, when the Panoz Esperante was in the lead for GT2, then the Bell Micro Porsche pushed his car and spun him out on turn 1 with only 3 minutes left! Then the Panoz crew complained, the Porsche got a black flag, thereby giving Panoz the lead again just in time for the checkered flag.

All the races were televised last year, and CBS had a few of them too. But, this year, they seem to have a lot more on TV. They must've had great ratings to order more of them. This is great, but I gotta get my TV antenna fixed.

EDIT: No, CBS has the same amount as last year. Three.
 
I wanted the MGs to upset the Audis in P1, but that didn't happen. Having said that, good job to Champion Audi.

There were three stories that really got to me. The first was Porsche's return to sportscar racing. Last pure prototype I can recall was the Porsche LMP that won Le Mans in 1997. It would be nice to see how well this P2 entry will go.

Speaking of P2, here's my second story. Zoom-zoom! I'm sending out mad props to Mazda for getting 2nd Place in Prototype 2. I think Mazda engines have been pretty reliable in endurance racing. I remember those commercials featuting Mazda's sportscar racing history, and you have to tip your hat to Mazda for their great reliability and wonderful success in racing. Not to mention, they are still the only Japanese manufacturer to win the biggest race in the world- the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Last time that's happened? 1991. Toyota tried and failed. Nissan could have had a shot. But Mazda's still has that "W" at Le Mans.

The third story is all about the GT2 race to the flag. Good job to Panoz winning at its home track. Perhaps the big question was whether or not the Porsche driver intentionally tried to whack the Panoz. I kind of thought it was a bit of rough driving, but how can you tell? Had this been a NASCAR race (did you know that NASCAR used to road race Road Atlanta?), it would have been "just racin'."

The ALMS will go back to work in May at... Portland, right? I going to try to bring back my ALMS general thread for more discussion about ALMS happenings. Also, it was rather weird that CBS did the coverage with the race WELL underway. But, that's what you can expect when a channel other than Speed Channel does the races.
