Many road cars in GT5 have racing versions. Are the race cars worth the extra cash? Road cars also allow more upgrades too.

Can someone make a comparison test on a track like le sarthe or Nurburgring?

Cars that I want compared:

Pagani Zonda c12 7.3 Vs. Pagani Zonda LM race car

McLaren f1 vs. McLaren f1 GTR

Mazda rx7 vs. rx7 LM race car

Ect....

It all depends what you're looking for really. The street cars are obviously street legal and might get a bit more power but the race cars are race build and can haul butt around the corners a lot faster than the street legal counterparts.

I was thinking of getting a grand touring car but I'm unsure whether these $multi-million machines are worth the extra bucks!

By the way, what is the best grand touring car for the money?

It's completely up to you. If you like touring cars, their racing ability, and have the cash, then go for it.

There really isn't a touring cars that's the "best" but if I had to pick one in GT5 i'd have to be the BMW M3 GTR Race Car.

Edit: If you would like to see all the touring cars in GT5 here is a little video I found on YouTube.

There's a difference between touring and grand touring (GT)

I already have a good touring car, GT category cars are of a significantly higher performance...

Oh well the same thing goes for GT, it's up to you. There is no "best" car in that category like I said earlier.

As I understand it, aren't most modern GT racing cars not really true Grand Touring cars anymore anyway? Other than maybe the M3. Most GT fields are made up of Porsches and Corvettes and Lamborghinis and such, which are sports cars. I've never quite understood the distinction but I'm sure there is one, seems I've mostly heard the term applied to high-performance high-comfort 4-door street cars though.

A bit OT I know sorry, but the difference between Touring and Grand Touring got me thinking about it.

I can't imagine many street cars being faster than the pure race version around a track if both are fully upgraded if for no other reason than downforce and the basic suspension(i.e. base performance that upgrades are added to). But there might be exceptions, I don't know for sure.
