So my grandpa got rear-ended by an SUV going 30mph. Car's probably a total loss and the lease was up in a few weeks anyway.

So, basically, what are the best cars in the same class as the C-class?

I think he's willing to look at lower price brackets too. Something cheap to keep. Mercedes has been really great to us though. Our bud at the dealership really takes care of him. He got to the accident before the police showed up. I don't know if he can get that kind of experience anywhere else. But perhaps if we can get something cheap then maybe, just maybe, we can get two so I can upgrade from my Accent hooptie. The Boss 302 will have to wait.

Any suggestions?

You might need to give more info than that.

Which generation C-Class was it and which price rangefor the new car?

The newest C-class. I'm thinkin' either 30-50k or under 30.

He doesn't like big sedans. I think we'll hit the Hyundai dealer anyway. Wish that freaking TURBO would get here already. :grumpy:

If he's serious about buying a good saloon car have him drive this:

You can even order a Sport model with the grille painted the body color. :D

I would suggest just getting another Mercedes of some sort. It sounds like you have good dealer support, and it would take a substantially better or cheaper car to get me to give that up.

Precisely. So the question is, is there?

Infiniti G37? Great quality car in the mid $30,000 range with the engine right from a 370z 👍

It's a trap!

Tell me Marc, where were you at the time of the accident, and have you ever driven an SUV?

Have you considered the 6th Gen Hyundai Sonata?

Wasn't me! Some guy was fussing with his kids in the back seats... not a good idea to have your eyes behind you like that when you're approaching an intersection.

Yes, I have considered a sonata, but am waiting for the turbos to get here.

Also, a 3-series is a strong consideration.

Lincoln MKZ? No cost hybrid option and with the "executive" package the interior looks quite snazzy. Standard heated/cooled seats etc.

(Yeah that's real wood)

That's also real ugly.

The current C-Class is one of the best looking sedans ever, in my opinion. But I'm sure like anyone else he'd like a change when he gets something new, so one of the other fantastic looking sedans would be the 3er...Might also want to look for a used (previous gen) Acura TL?

And in order to keep that dealer support, maybe they'd do a dealer-trade for him? I don't know if Mercedes dealerships are too good for that....

Tell him to get another C-Class. I don't really think glorified Vauxhalls (Buick) and Americanised Mazdas (Fusion) will really cut it after a current-gen C-Class.

Especially not the Vauxhall.

What's the difference between the 328, 325, and 330? He had a C350, btw.

Engine and grade. 325 is least powerful and least equipped, 330's almost the most powerful and well-equipped. The 335i is the highest-power model currently offered without getting into the M3. I think it draws even with the previous M3

I know what a 335 is. What about the 328 vs. the 325? And isn't a 330 just a 335 without turbos? Did the 330 replace the 328 or something?

Also, I know power figures and all that. What I don't know is what it's like to own one and what common problems, etc, are with all of these suggestions. That's why I made this thread.

What about the 328 vs. the 325?
Pretty much nothing. They all even had the same engine as the 330, only in different states of tune. When the 325 was discontinued, the 328 basically just took its place.

And isn't a 330 just a 335 without turbos?
Sorta. It could be thought of like that (especially the European version), but it isn't actually the same engine.

Did the 330 replace the 328 or something?
The 328 replaced the 330. Or, rather, the 330 was discontinued when the 335 came out and the 328 was closer in power to what the 330 had than the 335 is.

I can't speak for MB but I've been in many new 3 series and A4 and they aren't very impressive. The build quality and features are no better than a high-end mainstream car like that MKZ or Regal. (The American built BMWs are quite appalling actually in their build quality)

He's probably going to get a new Optima. We'll find out in May.
