The death of Colin McRae recently and Peter Brock months ago led me to this thread. You see, most people trying to acheive greatness are hopeful that fans will watch races and want to be like the racers they see on television. As glamourous as racing can be, it can also be dangerous. Legends in motorsports should be honored lovingly. When a legend retires or passes away, the gravity of his/her impact on motorsports becomes better recognized. Think back to all of Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s fans on that tragic day of the 2001 Daytona 500. When Dale Sr. died, the Intimidator basically sent great shockwaves to not only the NASCAR community, not only America, but perhaps the world as well. Then there was the extremely tragic death of one of Formula One's greats- Aryton Senna. We still remember and honor Aryton Senna for what he's accomplished. This thread is a thread in which I want you all to talk about some of racing's greatest inspirators. Who are/were some of the finest in any motorsport? I'm even extending "inspirators" to cars and racing teams. Think about Joest Racing in 1985 winning Le Mans that year as an underdog. "Nobody can beat the Porsches." Well, Joest's boys did. Maybe there is a car that was so advanced for its time that many people took notice of the car and applied their learnings to try to beat it in future races. Maybe a great inspirator in racing is someone not known for excellence in racing competition, but one who has done an amazing job in promoting racing. Maybe one such inspirator brought new meaning as to what constitutes a great racer or one who promotes racing on tracks and not on city streets and country roads.

GTPlanet, name me some of the finest inspirators of our time and even before our time. Maybe if the inspirators aren't retired or dead, who are some of the folks we will be remembering for a long time to come? Who will change motorsport for as long as possible? Who in the past has changed motorsport forever? Who are some of the greatest inspirators from the past and the present? Reply on. This is not restricted to just one form of racing or a specific country. So go ahead. Who are some of the many who have helped shape our motorsports culture as we know it? Who are some of the inspirations who made innovative changes to help make racing better for drivers and fans alike? Please reply now with some of the best inspirations in all of motorsport.

I guess you can take M Schumacher. He achieved a lot in F1.

Frankie Wainman Jr. Possibly the finest BRiSCA Stock Car driver ever. I used to love watching the races at Sheffield Owlerton stadium. He could fight his way from the back and build up a healthy lead with seemingly little effort.

Greatest inspiration in motorsport isn't a person. It's winning. It tastes great, it feels great, it smells great, it looks great, it is the true motivation, the true inspiration.

Ernie Irvan, nearly dying and coming back to race again.

There is also a chapter about him in a book called: "Chicken Soup for the NASCAR Soul"

From,
Chris.

I'd have to nominate a strange one, but the guy who invented the air flaps on Nascars. Truly a great inspiration in racing safety at the least.

I´d have to say Bernie Ecclestone! He has so much for not only Formula 1, but motorsport in general.
Undoubtedly, he has done some questional moves as well, but overall, he has had a tremendous impact worldwide.

Do they still hold Stock Car races at Odsal Stadium? - i would have thought that it would have been closer to your neck-of-the-woods than Owlerton?(which i can hear from my house!).

Not any more I'm afraid. It made way for a full-time Rugby field.

Besides, as stadiums go, Owlerton completely kicks Odsal into touch.
I love that place. :)
