OK, who would win a fight between Achilles, Ajax and Herecles?

I bet you didn't know that the word hermaphrodite comes from mythology?

You should read Homer's Odyssey and the Iliad. Great mythology!

I'm not really into that kind of stuff, but if you can find an abridged (I read better than most adults I know, and the unabridged version was over my head.) version of the Odyssey, it is actually a really interesting read. It kept me reading because it wasn't just Odysseus beating the crap out of every monster he saw (as I had formerly pictured mythology to function), he also had to outsmart a couple beasts as well. Quality work, Homer 👍. I can't vouch for the Iliad though, I haven't read that one.

The Iliad is basically the story of the fall of Troy. The unabridged version of the Odyssey took my 3 months to get through but it was well worth it. There is one part that goes on to describe the appearance of the warriors and it covers close to 12 pages! Just talking about their descriptions!

I do believe that it could be possible that Homer wasn't the creator of the stories, as they would have been passed by mouth, and perhaps he was credited for it as the most well known for retelling it.

Hermaphrodite comes from Hermes and Aphrodite's offspring. Poseidon (I think) was angry with Aphrodite for she was supposed to be his lover so cursed her child to be born with both forms of genitalia.

As for the fight, if Herakles had the armour of the Nemean Lion (ie, impenetrable armour), he'd win. Achilles would beat Ajax as as powerful as he is, he is just a normal human, (albeit an excellent warrior). It is debatable over who'd win between Achilles and Herakles, if Herakles knew of his weakness, he'd win. If not it is possible Achilles would win by strangling Herakles, else it'd be a draw in my opinion.

My mother passed on her love of Greek mythology to me. In fact, she read the Iliad while she was pregnant, which is how I ended up with the name Elissa. :)

I always wanted to go on to University to study Ancient Greek history and archaeology, but life didn't work out as planned. I still love the subject though, and am currently re-reading Homer's Odyssey.

I started learning of mythology when my dad read me poems and storys thats how I learned.
I agree bon. knowing that achillies ankle is his weak spot so it would be a tuff battle for both of them.
Edit
If you could be child of a Greek or Roman god or goddess who would you pick? Who is you favorite god or goddess Greek or Roman? What era was better Greek or Roman?

Hard to say which era was better. In terms of Mythology, Romans basically copied Greek mythology, but adopted different names. Interestingly, the Romans were actually very open-minded towards other's religions, and adopted the worship of many other "unofficial" deities, such as Sol Invictus (the Unconquerable Sun), Mithras (a mysterious Eastern deity of the Roman Army), and some adopted Egyptian worship, (which is actually similar to Greek). ;)

In terms of Warfare, the Romans did better but I'd say the Greeks were more interesting and heroic, especially in the pre-Roman era. Ever-increasing numbers of Persian invasions and civil disputes, it's surprising it ever survived as a country. Alexander proved to the world the might of Greek warfare, yet also the fragility of an empire (the largest ever empire, covering the entire Hellenistic world, lasted only from 336BC-321BC). Interesting to think what could have been with such skill.

As for the Romans, they too clearly had much military skill, perhaps greater, but it is not as heroic to simply have an empire. They had no epic tales of battles such as Troy, Thermopylae and of Alexander.

Ah wait I'm gonna see if I can add egiptian mythology. Fun. I think Greek was a better era Rome copied almost everything and renamed it to make it there's yes they added some things but still I think Greek is better FYI I also have another thread about magic I just made it if you wanna see.

I'm one of the only people I've met who has read both and actually prefers the Iliad.

I've always liked Apollo the most, but I don't really know why.

Couldn't this be the 'General Mythology' thread if there isn't already one?

You have a good point. I just don't know all general mythology just those three ad some Chinese. Shem if you can be son of any god roman Greek or Egyptian who would you pick whose your favorite?
And if I change name the name I would have to move thread then move it back to here so it's a little bit of a pain:(
