My question is regarding Grid Starts...

I have searched through this forum for the last year and only found one similar question which was half answered.

I take it, online, in free run, that is where you would try to say, for example, set a pole lap for your grid starts? Then, when you select race, the game will order the players in order of their fastest laps set in free run???

Or does "fastest first" just set you in order in the grid based on what the game thinks is the "fastest car"? Also, what if no one sets a free run lap? Is the fastest first grid arrangement then random?

If everyone runs laps and doesn't leave the track, it's set by those lap times. If no one runs laps, it's random.

Mostly true, but it's never really random. If no one sets a qualifying lap for example but you want a certain grid order, you only have to bring the cars out on the track in that order and then start the race and that's the order they'll line up in.

Also, if there are 6 cars for example and three get in Q laps, they'll line up 1,2,3 in their Q order so long as they don't leave the track. The other three will line up in their position on the track or if they aren't on the track, their position in the pit.

Anyway you look at it, it's never really random, there's always some kind of system at play, it's just not obvious.
