Okay, my reviews of older games may just been good old John-boy reviewing only classic games as well as giving older games good ratings. Well this time, I'm reviewing one that I thought was fun for maybe a little while. It's GT 64 Championship Edition. Now before I begin the review, let me remind you that this is NOT a Gran Turismo-type game. This isn't a port of Gran Turismo 1 to the Nintendo 64. This game comes from the pairing of Ocean and Imagineer. Apparently after "Multi Racing Championship" was made for this console, GT64 was made a year later by the same team. So was this a great racing game? Read on from my experiences.
PROS: the cars are mostly JGTC race cars, but you do get some Porsches, Lamborghinis, and such; you also get real racers from these JGTC rides; 8 to a track
CONS: the sounds are pretty dull; the handling of the cars is... okay; the FPS slows down a lot. I can remember the game going a little faster at one point; only three tracks, all with short and long variations; tuning isn't very deep; I read you HAD to qualify for a race in Championship Mode rather than an option; with mostly JGTC race cars, it would have been better to have some actual Japanese tracks rather than fictional tracks in Japan, Europe, and America
VERDICT: Failed execution and very limited effort in making this game a potential sleeper. To pull off an X-Play tactic, if you want a better game from around this time, get "F-1 World Grand Prix." I even reviewed it myself. To me, the game could have been much better, even for an N64 game... it just didn't happen too well. (Verdict: 4.25/10)
