Sony Announces Gran Turismo Awards

In another one of those odd examples of what a potent cultural phenomenon Gran Turismo has become, Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced plans to put on the "Gran Turismo Awards" in Las Vegas next month. An adjunct attraction to the SEMA auto show (a trade exhibition for the aftermarket parts industry), the GT Awards will recognize some of the year's best cars with various accolades, including a free appearance in the upcoming Gran Turismo 4.
Polyphony Digital director Kazunori Yamauchi will be on hand to deliver awards for Best SUV, Best Japanese Import, Best European Import, Best Domestic, Best Hot Rod, and Best in Show, the last of which will be awarded a free appearance in GT4.

If you're interested in checking out the awards show, it will be held at the Palms Casino in Vegas at 8PM on November 4 -- good luck crashing the gates.

Are they suggesting that manufacturers are paying to get their cars into the Gran Turismo series?
 
That part is interesting, I know TVR has been nothing but grateful to PD for the effect it had on their sales after GT1.
 
Well I've often found it interesting that anyone would not want their car(s) represented in THE premier racing game. And PD/Sony could rake in some mega cash by charging for representation. But I wonder why some of them, Mitsubishi, have so many cars and others, BMW, have so few. And still others, Ferrari, have none at all.
 
I remember reading a GT2 interview ages ago saying how they had to pay manufacturers tonnes of cash. Which I can understand for particular manufacturers but others you would have thought would have liked extra publicity.

They also said Volvo & Saab turned down being part of GT2 :(
 
And how about all the ads along side of the tracks and such? There's a certain amount to having realistic looking tracks/scenery but it isn't required that the game designers essentially give away free advertising to auto parts manufacturers.
 
I have always wondered how this product placement stuff worked. I was under the impression PD had to pay for all the vehicles and licensesed billboard signs in past and current GT game titles.

I know from recent interviews with major car manufacture represenitves I have read claimed PD has allowed for something quite amazing. The ability to receive an entire years worth of advertising concentrated into one simple game title. They are gratefull to say the least. So, why wouldn't PD start asking for money? It makes sense to me, but I'm not sure exactly how it works. I wonder how much it costs to include one vehicle?

Assuming PD used to pay for the ability to use the cars, it would seem that now they could charge the manufacturer for an appearance in the game. The game would seem to have more popularity than the car manufacturers AND it is easy advertising for them as well to their future market.
