Got the ylod going on my phat ps3. Took a year of GT to kill it.
So im Going to buy the new slim CECH3000 today and start the update process.

Any tips? Benefits of playing GT without downloading updates?

And does Anyone know how the new PS3 cech3000 compares to the older cech20 or 25? The older models are available here and I might be able to get them for much cheaper.

Mine is about to die too, it has lasted 18 hours a day since day 1. But now it suffers from major problems.

How old was it? My PS3 is four years old with no signs of slowing. Though as a precaution I run it for no more than four or so hours a day, usually on weekends only.

Ran mine for solid 12-13 hour stints since GT5 came out and first bought it few days after the PS3 was released and only now does it suffer from HDD corruption, still no sign of overheating.

Is the YLOD a gradual process, or does the whole thing just happen completely out of the blue and the PS is banjoed??? No way of recovering game saves etc?

I would get the old ps3 if you still can get it.

First of all it looks much better (imo). The new one looks so cheap.

The old one as you said is cheaper and maybe the new is a little more reliable but as the PS4 is coming in less than a year there is no reason to pay for it. You will prob not be able to kill a brand new of the old ps3's in less than a year no matter what you do ;)

So i'd go for the old one

YLOD usually happens mid-game with no warning. If you repair it correctly, no data is lost what so ever. I've repaired the YLOD three times now on my launch-date 60gb over the past year. Even if you are just gonna replace your old console, I recommend repairing it so you can transfer all the hard drive data easier. There are multiple step by step instructional videos on YouTube walking you through the YLOD repair.

Ylod is a b****h. And from what I hear, GT will do that to the older phat ps3s.
I've been expecting it for about a year. First signs showed up after about a month of GT. Ive been cleaning the hard drive, vacuuming the vents almost every week or so for a year, which used to somewhat solve the prob.

Now 5mins of GT will result in ylod. It still plays call of duty and other games fine.

I went ahead and bought the new slim, got a good deal on it. In the middle of data transfer now, which is a sloooooooow process.

Someone above said the PS4 is due out this year? Is that true?

Not due out this year, but it's rumored that it will be announced this June @ E3. So at absolute soonest I can imagine, PS4 could be out at the end of this year I guess but more than likely 2013 or 2014 would be the launch year for it.
And yeah, why does it take so long for a data transfer on these things? Even with relatively small amounts of data ( less than 20 gigs) it takes hours. On a computer using USB 2.0 you could get 20 gigs transferred in what 30ish minutes. Truthfully you could download a 20 gig file from the internet in much less time (I'm actually guessing on that since i don't download many files that are 20 gigs, but i feel like this is more than accurate.) than the PS3 seems to take to transfer it to a harddrive. Never could figure that out.

Ive had two fats take a crap...one was a slow YLOD where it showed graphical errors and loading errors for a while. The other most recent YLOD, it was by surprise and happened quickly and out of the blue. It had only been on for a couple minutes. I fixed one of the fats and bought a new slim for reliability. I love it so far.
The trick is to copy your save data to a usb every so often.

Guys - I have a 1TB hard drive connected to PC - could I just simply hook that up to the PS3 and copy game saves? What is it exactly that you copy over? Saved Data Utility? Game Data Utility?

Copy your game saves.

Took 4 hours to transfer 80 gb of data from my phat to slim. Man was it slow. Still I've read about people having to wait 72 hours for transfers.

what a difference between my phat ps3 and the new slim. Loads everything much quicker, graphics seem much crisper, and so quiet.

In case you are a PNS plus member you can use the online (cloud) storage; advantage: you can also transfer copy protected game saves ;)

Of course, it could have been any other game ... however, I do not know any other game that was forcing the user to keep their consoles running for at least 24 hours (before the endurance save was introduced).

^Just transferred my 60gb over to my new 160 that I got for Christmas. Took me 7hrs. And yes, I had no idea my 60 was so loud until I fired up the new slim, very nice.

Storm - "graphics seem crisper"

Really???

Not saying I don't believe you - just seems peculiar. Any other fat to slim converts can vouch for this? I am a fat myself....

Some people have said they experience frame rate drops when there's many people racing and it's a track with time change and/or weather, but I haven't experienced a drop in framerate once. I bought my slim when GT5 came out. Maybe there's differences between older and newer systems in terms of performance.

All about looking after it. I have had my old fat PS3 for 5 years now and it's still running like a dream.

Exactly, you've got to keep it well-venthilated, not run it too often, and most of all just treat it well. Most people who suffer YLODs do not follow all of these guidelines. I have, and as a result my 4-year old PS3 hasn't had a single problem besides freezing a few times.

GT killed my launch 60GB about two weeks after it came out, luckily i didn't get too far in the game yet

The only noticeable difference I've found (3rd week on the new 'slim) is how quiet the new console is. There may be a slight improvement in load times and frame rate dropping, but that's more then likely due to the mileage on my old fat console. That thing was about used up.

Conspiracy Theory....
Methinks Sony is bringing out new updates to kill off old phat ps3's,therefore making people having to switch to new slims.

Nope

Data transfer taking ages? Oh that's going to suck...badly (recently put in a 500gb hard drive as my OG 40gb was full)

I had about 100gigs to transfer. Took 4 hours.
Got lucky though, the data transfer utility has a very dodgy reputation.
I thought mine was stuck in the middle. Looked it up on the forums and i saw people waiting 72 hours for the transfer to end. A lot of them cancel the process just because they can't wait any longer.

Before anyone starts data transfers, remember to delete any useless data from the source ps3. A smaller sized transfer has a higher rate of success and will logically take less time.
