Hi everyone, i'm new in this forum and maybe this question is just too old and already solved, but gimme a chance. So, i feel like my experience in GT Sport is just... incomplete. I explain: i'm actually playing with a controller, and i gain not too bad racing results (Rank A-S, on the FIA Nations i'm actually 50 global and 3 nation), but i feel like i'm hitting a wall when i try to improve my lap times. I know every racing technique, and watching the Top players my play style is incredibly similar to their. In every race i have always the same gap of 2-3 seconds between me and the fastest (Some races less than 1 sec.), so my question is: can a wheel like the G29 (That is one of my future choices) help me to reduce the gap and to make fast lap times? Is that gap depending on my poor equipment? I play with a controller on sensivity 6 and ffb 1-5, but even changing that and trying for hours the result is the same. Does a wheel make the difference?

Thanks

Yes it can. I assume you have TCS on with the controller? That will be what makes those few seconds difference from the faster drivers.
To give you an example, my best time on dragon trail 2 in the beetle with controller is 1.32.3xx with all aids off apart from TCS on 2, and ABS. That is as near perfect as I can do. If I put TCS off I’m like Bambi on ice!

I got a G29 yesterday, and within an hour I was doing 1.32.4xx with all aids off apart from ABS. IT won’t take much more practice to get down to 1.30.xxx, and that’s where the difference lies.

I’ve had wheels in the past over the years, and once you get used them your driving gets a lot smoother and controlled

In short, probably yes. In previous GT games it would have been a fairly obvious yes as the controller depending on the cars/tracks was usually about 0.5-1 seconds slower. On GT Sport though the people I know who use a controller are definitely faster than they used to be, and getting into the top 10 on the leaderboards is also easier than on previous GT games. It's hard to tell if the controller is as fast as a wheel as most of top drivers will tend to buy a wheel anyway, especially as most play other sim games where a controller sucks, but the difference a wheel can make is definitely less.

However just because it's possible to be at least nearly as fast on a controller doesn't mean everyone necessarily will be. Although it takes time to get used to a wheel it is generally considered easier to go fast with one and be consistent as you have a lot more control over your inputs.

Most importantly though, and IMO the main reason for getting one, is that racing games are a lot more fun when you have a wheel and add a whole new level of immersion that you don't get with a controller, so if you are able to get one I would highly recommend it. 👍

Thanks guys for the reply, i'm thinking about getting a wheel as fast as possible, i never tried one and it seems to be really funny to play with.

DJDEST: Yes, i usually play with TCS on 2 and steering assist on Weak. Mainly because it is very very hard to play without any driving aids. Yesterday i tried for about 2 hours on dragon trail, and i managed to do a 1:38.9 with the Porsche 911 RSR, while the fastest was 1:36.8. I did it just one time, my main lap times were 1:40. Playing without driving aids is just... a joke. I'm sure that i do nothing wrong on my driving, but it is very dirty and i do a lot of steer-spikes.

SPURGY777: I found too that this game is most addicted to the controller then the other GT Games, but i find really hard to reach soooo fast lap times with that, even tho i'm not that bad. With the joypad i have a very inconsistent driving, and very spiky, but i'll see.

Thanks

I'm faster with a DS4, but get a lot more satisfaction from hustling round with a wheel (G29).

When I used a DS4, I could drive without any aids (except ABS). I used the right stick for throttle and braking, otherwise I don't think I could drive without aids.

Similarly, is it quicker to use the motion steering or the joysticks? I feel like I'm not quite as smooth as I need to be using the joysticks, especially on smaller turns, but I'm definitely slower with motion steering right now, as I'm not used to it. Is it worth continuing to try?

This is your answer.
If nothing else you will be just as fast (probably faster) with a wheel, but the immersion is the important bit.
It is far more rewarding to race with a wheel, so smile when you hit your wall.

I use the DS4. NO aids other than ABS. Triggers for throttle and brake, right stick for shifting up and down.

I like to think the lack of a wheel is what is preventing me from closing the 2-3 second gap to the top drivers. It feels better than thinking I am simply not at fast ;)

There's one thing that lets this game down is the lack of wheel settings..there should have been an advanced mode for steering wheels where you can set it up how you like

I play normally with an wheel (T150, settings in my signature) but with GT Sport i don't gave any problem to play with the Dualschock and do similar times..i just don't think their's a big difference between wheel and controller in this game..

I got gear changes in the triggers, throttle and brake in right analogue stick and steering in the left analogue stick... And play with no aids, only ABS on "low" setting.

PD did a really, really good job with the controler implementation, it can easily be seen that GT Sport is focused towards the controller players, more than wheel players..

Hopefuly now they improve the FFB on wheels...i find GT Sport quite numb with the wheel...they need to work on it for sure.. Project C.A.R.S 2 has a quite more better FFB, and assetto corsa... Well is an another world...
Would really like to see some FFB settings like assetto and Pcars2 in GTS.

No question I'd be faster with a wheel, the thing holding me back is accelerator and steering fidelity. Coming over the brow at Dragon Trail T1 chicane exit is very hard with no TC or anything, in Sport mode, RH tyres, in first, under pressure.

I have to short shift to 3rd to reduce power and reduce the snappy throttle, its very difficult to not spin and stay fast there.

With a wheel I could be smooth as silk, and ease the throttle on with much more control.

Just not got the space

GTSport has the worst controller implementation for me, this due to the non sensitive buttons of the DS4..

Wheel has the big big advantage that you can accelerate and braking at the same time ....

IR

The only advantage I see when using a wheel is steering input consistency. I’m still faster with a controller after a week or so with a wheel. No problem with throttle or brake control using the triggers.

I may never be faster with a wheel but it’s definitely more fun.

Manual dexterity is a thing and having hands that can't provide slight inputs is an issue. It's not the controller. If it were, everyone would be incapable of driving without aids while on a controller and that is not the case.

From the discussion on various threads, I seem to be just as fast on the controller as most people on the wheel. I'm sure that I am not alone.

I think the wheel is all hype about immersion..You are turning a wheel instead of using a stick. I know a lot of people who are really fast using just a controller, and I used to race with a guy in GT6 who swore to me that he used the directional buttons for steering, and he was damn hard to beat!! He told me it was more about the line you drove than anything else. He even shared some of his set-ups with me, and even using his set-ups I was NO WHERE near as fast as he was :(

and ~20 years of "X" and "square" are very hard to change..

Quoted for truth!

...

Ultimately I was never as fast with a wheel in GT6 as I was with a controller, but the enjoyment of the game was on another level and that's why I think people should do it.
