GT Sport Custom Race Discussion (You need to try it!!)

Hoping to start a discussion on the GT Sport 'Custom Race' mode. Its filled with a very extensive option set for creating a wide range of scenarios and races. And highlights the strong work on the AI that goes largely unnoticed in the very limited 'career'. Provides a good opportunity for racing while we wait for more content in Sport mode.

The prizes also scale according to the difficulty, race length and starting position you set. Potentially some big rewards here :D

I just came off a race @ Suzuka with Gr.3's. 8 laps, field of 20, AI on Pro, tyre wear set to 10x (R Hards), fuel consumption set to 5x. This meant a pit stop was mandatory for fuel, and the tyres also showed a very noticeable amount of wear by mid-race. It was exciting to notice some AI pitting on different laps. I chose to lean the engine somewhat and go for the undercut, and gained several track positions doing so. The AI that won the race also stayed out a lap longer and gained 4 positions, looking on the post-race display.

I can see how fun it would be to create endurance races through this using the time function. The AI put in a solid performance with some good racing for positions. I could see when they was starting to struggle on old tyres and that tempts you to push a bit harder. Also had one spin out in-front of me through the casino section which was entertaining.

It took me 15 hours of playtime to even notice this feature was there  Not seen it discussed in any detail yet...

Share your custom races and/or race reports? :gtpflag::gtpflag:

I find custom races to be most entertaining in this game, usually I set laps 10 to 20 and tyre wear and fuel consumption to 5x. AI to pro and 20 cars.
It sure is fun to drive when you can turn boost off and damage on etc..
Actually I dont even care for a lack of a decent career mode in this game that I first missed mostly.

I haven't actually bought the full game (yet) but during the demo I found the custom races to be be one of my favourite features.
It contains enough options to get a good race with the AI cars. And the AI is certainly improved over previous incarnations, they can be quite tenacious while around you. Although some did seem to give up once you had overtaken them and they seemed much more competitive in the race cars compared to the road cars.

The two things I'd add to the custom race screen are a save favourite settings feature (since this would save you having to reset all the options to what you like every time) and a random grid position option (which would give a slightly different challenge to each race). I suppose a qualifying feature wouldn't go amiss either.

In the Demo I did a 1 hour race at Dragon Trail for Gr.3 cars. Fuel & tyres on x1, pro AI, Boost off and started last 20 car race. Rolling start with smallest distance between cars.

Didn't even try to pass a car until the second lap. I pitted for fuel and tyres after about 36 minutes. The two M4's in the lead pitted at about 45 minutes. I won by about 7.5 seconds I think.

Not bad but the game needs a faster AI setting than that. I caught up 18 seconds to the leaders and took the lead before my pitstop.

Completely agree, being able to save and share a race preset would be amazing. Similar to the ‘blueprint’ I’m sure I’ve seen in some other racing title before :D

I tried to set up a 1 on 1 race with the old M3 against the old Supra on high diff. but I have recently noticed that once you select to have only 1 opponent, you still cannot choose a specific car as your opponent which was very dissappointing. Then I tried different AI diff and group selection combinations (also boost off/on etc) and still I always get the Toyota S-FR as an opponent. There is absolutely no randomisation which I hope will be adressed. The same issue also happenned (still 1 on 1 race setups) when I selected a higher group. Moving on to N300 I kept getting M4 no matter what settings I used. If anybody has worked around this issue, please share your setup.

I do custom races pretty often when practicing with a different car/track combos rather than just running time trials. I have been wanting to get around to doing a 40-50 lap race somewhere.

I wish AI was more competitive. I would like to use custom races to improve my race pace which I desperately need, but they can't last even 1 lap :grumpy:

It's like PD deliberately pushes us to play more online, I believe they could do much better.

Gr.2, Nürburgring Nordschleife, 2 laps, start 11 [default], Turbo off, Professional.

Can you beat the A.I.? [A.I. lap times: 6:25< > Some times 6:21...]

It appears the AI always run with Bop on in class races and with Bop off for spec or same make races. For more challenge I often race 1-2 classes higher or choose a car that's slow for its class with Bop on. You can always lower power or increase weight to increase difficulty and don't abuse track limits at the usual spots.

Is there any way to match opponent tires to the one I have on my car?

I was racing N500 with SM tires and opponents seem to all use SH.

There's no option for AI. It's a shame, because the Daily One Make races change the tyre compunds to suit. Also, the Campaign races are programmed for certain AI to start and finish on different compunds, to the rest of the field, as well.

Usually for me it’s the Ferrari 458 GT3 on Nurburgring GP or Le Mans, 5 laps, professional difficulty, no boost, grid start, 20 cars.

For mini endurances: 30-60 minute with max damage and tyre and fuel consumption set to 5x.

In a way the custom race option shows how good the AI can be, but often also how bad it can be, they brake in weird places, usually mid corner in high speed corners, they sometimes even almost come to a standstill in medium speed corners, it’s pretty good to race the AI in most cases, but they’re dangerous to follow closely at certain tracks. I do like how they sometimes anticipate you making a move and then take a defensive line to block you... but also hate how they sometimes act like you’re not there and just smash in to you...

I do spend most of my driving time in custom races, when I’m not painting a car that is... I like the options they give you, but there are so many more I would liketo see in the future... (I probably shouldn’t get started on listing those though...)

Ah the Custom race mode. I love it because it reminds me of GTPSP's arcade race mode where you can earn money but with additional options such as fuel consumption, penalties, tire wear, etc.

Now as for the races, usually I use Gr.4-Gr.1 cars and I race for 40-60 mins regardless of which track.

Yes! I agree. I loved the GT PSP! And it had a decent AI too!

I am trying to set up a scenario to race a US Muscle Car (SM tires) against modern / classic International cars. The N300 Classic Stingray seems to work fine. Still tweaking the settings to make it challenging but assists to minimum, including traction control and ABS, Professional AI. Enough laps to fill daily practice and get one pitstop.

Good Fun!

The game was almost perfect, needed a few more cars on track, but fun all the time. I can see how Cr. prizes translated over to Custom Races in GTS. Increase laps and Cr. increases.

Seeing how PD missed making the CTR into a Gr. 4 racer, I'm trying that at the moment. Shouldn't be hard to plug in power levels akin to the Megane.

I largely ignored custom races as there was enough content to tide me thru.

However are there are any races that are particular good money spinners for your time spent?

Eg. N300 vs. N1000 on dirt etc.

I do prefer a bit of realism if it makes you more money ie. 3x tyres 3x fuel consumption

I myself soon would wanna see 30 player option cuz i have not seen one, i myself play with these settings;
20/20 start position, grid start.
Fuel consumption 2/3x, tyre wear 2/3x as well.
Difficulty:Any
