I've been thinking what exactly could rekindle the excitement I had years ago for Gran Turismo.

I remember talk of an open world GT, I believe there was even an article here years ago with pictures of city driving.

I really enjoy Horizon, but believe PD could do it even better with having an endless amount of tests and challenges in an open world environment.
What are your thoughts?

I think that only GT lifers — and even then, only a proportion of them — enjoy the "endless amounts of tests", if you mean something like license tests. I always tried to do them first in new games, but as I've met more people who've played GT games, I've found the majority see them as a chore.

It'd be great for Sony to have a proper competitor to Horizon. With PD as its only racing game studio these days it'd seem like a shoe-in, but I can't see the company essentially doubling in size to be able to handle getting two games out in the time it takes for one currently.

If only Sony hadn't shuttered Evo Studios. Asset sharing between it and PD, and a pivot for DriveClub to be set in a true open world, would've been aces.

Honestly I would prefer both, but I like realism thus why racing on a known world circuit will suit my style at best.
But I mean there are moments where you would like to explore around and you think to yourself hmmm I wonder what happens if I could go over here/there (get out this "map").
I enjoyed the heck out of Need for Speed back in the old days and I have yet to try any of the Horizon series.

But yeah thats my opinion about it even if they do decide to make an "open world" GT I would still try it.

They're two different styles with two different goals. There's really no reason why one couldn't enjoy them side by side.
I can't enjoy racing in an open world game anymore. They're way too chaotic and over the top. I bought an NFS game and Burnout paradise last year I haven't played them since.

I'm sure Sony is happy to see that FH is now the biggest car game... Why not an open world? At the end, it doesn't matter. IMO, Poly should focus on fun. The old GTs were fun, not too serious with cool music. Less sim and stiff cameras, more fun and rock music.

I don't think PD are the type of studio suited to making such a game. The technology is certainly there but the time required to make an open world game added to the slow approach of the studio wouldn't be a good combination.

Personally I have no interest in an Open World racer. If I want illegal street racing I'll play GTA, I like Gran Turismo for it's organized professional racing element and menu system. What's wrong with having a menu system these days? In open world games I get so bored and disengaged driving around to the different markers.

I agree with you about the time but I doubt the technology is even applicable to an open world game. All PD games have always been loaded environment states without any assets being streamed to the player the way it would in an open world game. I doubt the GT game engine could even work for an open world game.

More than likely Sony would have to acquire a totally separate studio with solid open world tech and then import PD assets and try to match their physics engine.

I think we've discussed this before... Turn 10 could not do an open world game.

They had to get the services of an ENTIRE NEW COMPANY to get open world to happen... of course there was lots of sharing of resources from US Turn10 -> UK Playground to get this to go.

I'm not a huge fan of Turn10 but let's be real here... they had the resources to do 700 car and what? 32 tracks from day one.

So what hope does PD have to replicate this? ALmost none.

And further is it in PD's DNA to do something open world? They're too Japanese to do this (if you know what I mean).

I'm pretty hardcore like many of you guys... real world and PD original tracks is what I want HOWEVER saying that, the dream for me is an open world game that runs at 60fps and has real world tracks.

eg. If you want to run in Australia like Horizon 3 then let me drive to Bathurst and experience the track... let me drive to Eastern Creek, let me drive to Phillip Island...

Ya get me? If you want to run it in the UK then give me Silverstone, Donnington Park, Anglesea, Dunsfold, Brands Hatch, Thruxton, Goodwood...

This wont ever happen. Ever.

I like having both, GTS and Forza Horizon. I am teaching my daughter the basics of driving in FH4. It is suprising how much she is getting out of it, at 14 I would have thought she would have more idea of the rules of the road but driving a car on British roads in FH4 had taught her quite a lot. It is great that the game has all the street furniture and is not just a large area to drive around. I would strongly recommend parents to get their teenagers to try it - might cut down on the number of expensive driving lessons needed.

GT free roam? Just get Assetto and download this free roam map converted from GTA ;)

Seriously though, if PD made an open world game it's going to be very boring with all their restrictions. GT physics isn't that great for sandbox type games. The closest real game that captures the feeling is Driver San Francisco (reasonably realistic arcade physics, eclectic choice of cars, cockpit view with good detail). Otherwise I'd rather Kaz focus on fixing all the problems with GTS.

I love the direction GT is going these days with the addition of Sport Mode. I'd prefer if they kept focus on what they are doing now and expand on the competitive side of the game. I love open world games in other genres, but not in this one.

Open world racing games are just boring to be honest.

Circuit racing is where its at with its competition not to mention getting a few tenths to be faster along with watching fuel and tyres.

When it comes to open world racing games no game comes close to Test Unlimited of 2006. That game was magical no open world game has come close to implementing its formula.

Open world racing game die out easily but Test Drive Unlimited was something special.

Guessing that is with the wheel, given you can use gears, pedals, clutch etc.

I think Gran Turismo will continue on the path it’s been on for a good few years now.
That is, blurring the line between real and virtual motorsports. First we had GT Academy and now we have the FIA sanctioned championships.
I can’t see PD shifting away from that. Especially when emotorsports could potentially become bigger and bigger. The coverage of last years Nations Cup and Manufacturer series was of a very good quality and a great success. Both finals are worth a watch for anyone that hasn’t seen them.
I don’t see PD changing direction or creating a new open world title.
Nor would I personally want them to.

Not sure how many tests are enough. I could see PD making a few:

- Maintain the speed limit, follow the navigation commands and pass the intersection, before the light turns red.

- Accelerate quickly to the speed limit(do not go over) and brake before the pedestrian crossing, before the timer runs out.

- Merge with traffic on Tokyo Expressway, enter the fast lane before the marker

- (No traffic) Exit Tokyo Expressway. Make sure to slow to the speed limit before the marker.

- (With traffic) Exit Tokyo Expressway. Make sure to exit at designated exit, without bumping into other cars.

Basing your opinion of open world racing games on The Crew 2, is like basing your opinion of action films as a genre on Transformers.

As for the topic - I can't imagine a less suitable studio for an open-world game of any kind, than Polyphony, haha. It'd take Yamauchi until about 2052 to make it.

Should have kept Evo around to iterate on Driveclub.

Forza Horizon is boring not to mention overrated

I sea a post with the word 'horizon' and my thoughts go to flat earth posts.

Im well ready for multiplayer open real world cities to drive around in psvr

I think it'd be cool if PD made some sort of usable "GT city" (i.e. a fully detailed expansive fictional city that contains the routes of the Special Stages of old and/or newer Tokyo Expressway configurations), and then gives us a course/path creator so we could pick our own routes for tracks. But a standalone game with just that? I dunno. I feel like with PD's track record it'd be an interesting (and honestly probably even well executed) new direction, but ultimately most likely take away from the development of other track assets for the "mainline" series, and I feel that's a net negative.

Speaking of a city with custom paths, wasn't such a thing talked about with Ronda back in the early GT6 days? Though, that won't have been the only promise broken with the course maker...

As someone who couldn't wait for an open world Forza and then when it happened got bored by the 4th iteration, please NO.

To make it appeal, PG have had to suck every ounce of what makes road driving thrilling - judging how much speed to carry/how will that adverse camber affect my line etc - just so they can wow the casual gamer with how a McLaren Senna can take a short cut through a fence, over some mounds and come out relatively unaffected on the other side. Then you have way too many events, all of which feel entirely superfluous. I can't muster enthusiasm to yomp over fields in a 4x4 anymore. I've seen it all, 4 times now.

To me, that kind of game is so stale.
