So I'm going back and fourth with a company about holding a sim-racing competition in my area with a local eSports origination.

But does anyone know how Polyphony/Nissan set up their GT Sport and GT Academy competitions? Was there a special LAN they used or did they just set up an online server and lock it out to those specific people?

I have no clue but out of curiosity, where is your area?

The same way I do it: PSN accounts that are only friends with one another and kept private, plus a private lobby.

Although there's a dedicated game build for these official events, as I recall.

Setup a private lobby that only accepts X number of connections (assuming you know how many people you expect to join) and kick anyone else that joins (or ask them to leave, if you're feeling polite).

Once full you have your private session.

That seems the most reasonable then. I'll talk with the other organizers and we'll see if we go through with it.
You will need an external internet connection, just for reference. We used to do GT3 iLink and GT4 LAN events, and they could be done anywhere there was electricity. GT5, GT6 and GT Sport all required internet for the networking features necessary to sign in the accounts, create the rooms and so on. I've not mucked around much with GT Sport yet, but GT5 and GT6 only had the tiniest amount of actual internet traffic, even while running all day as, after the initial conditions, the consoles just talked to each other through the switch. If the internet drops for any reason, so does your game.

I don't think that the official event builds require this - I think they're entirely local, if necessary.
