Hi,

Just out of interest, how long would you say the life span is for a GT game disc is? By reading peoples posts on here, you seem to be playing your discs to the max to get 100%.

Also I have heard alot on different forums about sometimes the discs get scratched. Is this becuase of the laser when it's going around in the PS2, or just because people don't look after the discs?

Also I would be very interested to know how many people still have a working copy of GT1, does the disc still perform well?

Thanks

I have working, played-since-they-were-released copies of GT1, GT2, and GT3 that still work like new. They all work fine, since they've been well kept and I keep my PS2 horizontal. Also, I DON'T use them to play dog-frisbee with...

The only reason the disc would be scratched is if someone didn't take proper care of it. Disc players are specifically designed so that nothing is actually in contact with the disc while it's spinning.

As long as you take care of them, they'll last indefinitely. One of the plus's of disc technology. Even my oldest PS1 games play just fine to this day.

I handel my disks extremely well. Better than most of my friends. always in their cases, stacked nice and neat. But honestly I think my first gen PS2 is scratching my disks. I never had a scratched disk once in the PSX days, but now I play all my games in my PS2 and they all have scratches on them. and my GT3 disk is so scratched up it's just stupid. I swear when I press eject the disk is still spinning when the spindle lowers it into the tray.

As they all said, threat your discs with care and they shouldn't end up being scratched. Lifespan of the discs should be indefinite (in other words, you would have better chances that the laser on your PS2 wears out way earlier than the discs would do).

:D I am sure NOT playing dog-frisbee should DEFINITELY help! lol!

The only advice I could give you about this is, before pressing the eject button, press the reset button, and wait until you can go to the "browse" screen... this way you should be able to eject the DVD before it starts spinning.

The only thing that would result in a disc expiring before you do is some critical fault in it or bad storage. Otherwise, the data will only be damaged when the particles disolve some billion years down the road :D

Just be careful with them. Thats the beauty of optical storage - its fairly durable and its life span is basically forever.

I got GT2 as a gift, and it was new. It's never failed me after almost 5 years. My copies of GT1 and GT3 were bought used, and neither one has failed me either. Both stores that sold me the game(s) had a 7-day "no scratch" guarantee, and I played each one for hours and hours and never found a single problem with either one. This is probably due to two things:

1) I rarely play anything other than the GT series, so the games don't get swapped out of the console very often.

2) I treat CD's and DVD's as if they are made of glass. They go right back in their proper container after being used.

Maybe this is because when my dad had a $1200 CD player in 1983, CD's cost $25-30 a piece! So I when used it, he'd make darn sure that I was careful with it! Ever since CD-ROM's have sunk below the $1 threshold, people treat them like disposable beverage coasters...

I have read that optical storage as an average lifespan of about 25-35 years (of course, the technology has only been around 25 years) even when kept scratch-free and away from all contaminants. So I don't think a CD or DVD will last a lifetime.

pupik: well said.

So we hope to have GT3 re-release in 20 years, just for the old times sake? :D

We will be playing it like we can play Super Mario and Donkey Kong with the composite plug in games on our 100" inch LCD HDTV WJST Sony Wega's in 2025 :) 👍

I saw an adhesive for discs in a commercial ,Idont recall the company name though. Also My Ps2 was slowing down on games at times but it wasnt becuase of the games it was just becuase it needed to be serviced.

All of the above is the same for me, with the due amount of care there is no reason these games cant last forever

unless you lend it to a friend. then it depends on how he looks after it ...

Yep... Been there, done that :indiff: Lending a disc to a friend is usually the beginning of the disc's end :D I know this was true for me... when some of my friends would borrow one of my discs, that disc would come back home with "n" more scratches that it had before he left his proud owner (me)...

Usually:
-Scratches before one of my friends borrows a disc = 0 (or a number very close to it)
-Scratches after the disc returns to me = +oo (positive infinity, or a number steadily approaching it)

Don't lend your discs, unless you know your friends threat them as nice as you do... (or unless they are willing to pay $1 for every extra scratch that they make :D)
