GT3 Disc Problem (Not PS2 Format)

I just bought GT3 and put it in my PS2 eager to play it. For some strange reason when I put it in the PS2 browser recognizes it as a PS2 disc but when I ask it to enter and play the disc it takes a while to read it and then jumps back to the browser, continues to read and then complains about the disc not being PS2 format. It says please insert a playstation or playstation 2 disc. Can someone please help me? Any ideas what is wrong?

I have other games on DVD and they work fine. CDs also work fine, irrespective of blue or regular. Please help.
 
If you have the receipt for it, take it back to the store and get a replacement/refund. Otherwise, I would say you're stumped.
 
Check to see if the disc is scratched.I'd say return it and get a new copy.
 
it is legit right? and not one burned on a computer?
Again, it is either scratched, or something that would be really rare, someone swapped the disk of the game for something else.
