can anyone please help me. i just got ps3 80 gig for xmas, i am useing hdmi cable to my sony 56 in hd wega. my ps3 system says it is doing 1080i but when i load up gt4 it only works in 480p.
when i go to screen settings before a race and try to set 1080i the temporary sreen that goes away in 30 seconds, has some black artifacts on it and if i say ok to the 1080i settings it will just go to the load screen that has the gt and the little swirly load symbol but i just stays there forever and nevr loads the race.

What is your TV capable of displaying? I have been playing GT4 on my PS3 since I got it and have not had a problem. I am sure if you look around the forums there are threads about the different displays and what not for the PS3.

Next time you should also try to work on the spelling/grammar.

Actually I've never gotten GT4's in game 1080i display setting to work right either (I have the 60GB). Although after a couple of tries I just gave up. Since the 80GB is using mostly software to provide PS2 backward compatibility, as opposed to the 60GB which has full hardware support, I would not be surprised if that specific setting is just not supported. I could be wrong though and looking through the dedicated GT4 forum for more information is probably a good idea.

And in closing I have to agree with F1D, yes please do make an effort to use proper grammar and spell check. It doesn't take that much energy, shows a little respect to those whom you are requesting information/help from and is just good practice in general.

Good luck with the GT4 problem and enjoy your new PS3.

Never had a problem with it on my 20GB. Make sure your TV supports 1080i, and make sure you have 1080i selected as a viable output resolution on the PS3 itself.

The PS3's set display has no effect on the PS2 rendering. All it does is scale the image and not the resolution. 1080i works fine on my PS3 but it looks cleaner IMO not changing anything. It may be 480p but it has way less jaggies and is brighter and more vivid.

1080i seems to work better on the PS2 from what I've noticed and using it on ps3 negates the visual enhancements the ps3 applies.

Sony, I am PISSED off that GT4 isn't working. I have gone through two systems now, and I'm returning them both.

I bought a 40 GB PS3 last week. I have GT4 and wanted to play it. It didn't work. I read that in order for Sony save money, you removed PS2 compatibility from the 40 GB model, and you need an extra $100 from me for the 80 GB before I can play GT4.

Ok, I went out today and bought an 80 GB PS3. I now have spent $963 on PS3s. I put in GT4, it recognizes it as a PS2 disc, great! It fires up, great! Wait.... I can't play it. Ok maybe the disc is scratched, no it's perfect. Sony told me to fork over another $500 for the 80 GB PS3, and that I could finally play my game, right? Well, it didn't work, so I spent an hour on the internet and found this thread. I guess Sony are a bunch of liars.

Well Sony, I am returning BOTH PS3s. You cheap guys can go to hell. Gran Turismo is the series that made Playstation popular! The only reason I am getting a PS3 was to play GT4 upscaled, and later to play GT5. How can you possibly not support GT4? You guys are bastards. You wasted half my day with your lies, my gasoline, my time dealing with store clerks... this is just terrible.

If I read that you fix GT4 in a firmware update, I will buy a PS3 at that later time. Until then, you are not getting one cent of my money. I hope my returns of both PS3s to the store cost you quite a bit, so you can get my message through your thick idiot skulls.

You didn't install the update I'm guessing...

Why be so hasty to return them before looking for possible solutions? From the sounds of it you haven't tried much to get it to work. GT4 does work on the 80GB PS3 regardless.

First of all, calm down, you sound really mad and I think you need to take a deep breath and just slow down.

Before going out and purchasing an expensive gaming console like the PS3 you should have had all your information together, be it going onto forums or even going onto wikipedia to see which version of the PS3 has backwards compatability. The launch version 60GB and 20 GB versions both had hardware to support PS2 games. The 20GB version is only available in Japan and the 60GB has been put out of production, you can also see that the 40GB version does not have any BC.

So you are left with an 80GB PS3 or a used 20GB/60GB PS3 if you want to play GT4 so you should have known that before you went and spent your money on something this expensive. Could you also clarify what a 80GB PS2 is? Perhaps the 80GB PS3 needed a system update before being able to play some games because other members on this website have had no problems playng GT4 on their 80GB PS3.

Before going off on a huge rant about how stupid Sony is you should have tried alot more things to try and fix your problems.

You're right, I should have been expected to know that, even though it was widely advertised that PS3 IS backwards compatible. It was my mistake that sony removed backwards compatibility and gave no clear indication on the box.

And then it was my mistake for getting the one that does have BC, but not knowing that it wouldn't work for one of the top selling PS2 games of all time. Stupid me.

You have ridiculously high expectations of consumers. I heard advertising that it is backwards compatible, even if it was a year ago. I bought the product for that reason. I got screwed. Plain and simple. Sony is being super cheap asses. Well, I have no use for their pricey product if it doesn't do what I need it to.

Btw, I did update the firmware to 2.1 before I made my 'rant'. I am furious, and rightfully so. I will be broadcasting this to everyone I know. Even if you think it's fair, you may be right, but I hope to save someone the pain that I endured to reach NO goal, and I hope to make it known to Sony.

I'm glad I spent the extra cash for PS3 that plays all my PS2 games flawlessly. You could try Ebay for 60GB system if you really want perfect BC. But there are tons of great games on PS3 besides GT4.

Once you see PS2 games being upscaled on your HDTV, the whole backwards compatibility issue goes out the window.

Blah.

For the record: Sony didn't remove the Emotion Engine and Graphic Synthesizers to reduce cost. Sony removed them to emphasize PS3 games on the PS3, not PS2 games. I think that is something Microsoft realized correctly a long time ago.

It's a problem on your end. It works.

Heh, I have to agree with that. When I first got my 60 gb PS3 I was staying at my parents' and so I hooked it up to their HD television. Curious to see GT4 at 1080, I tried it out. It didn't look terribly good. u__u I gotta say that the extra clarity just made the tracks look rather empty and lifeless.

However, I still do enjoy being able to play my older games once in a while.

They did remove it to reduce cost, Sony says a lot of things to entice people to believe them. Remember rumble being last gen? What other point would there be in having the NEW chip that's in the 80gig systems for software and hardware emulation. The 40Gig systems have no NEW chip and the 80gig systems are still in full production. When they no longer sell systems with the chip, thats when they've stopped backwards compatibility.

I for one love my PS3 ability to play PS2 games. And they look fine on my HDTV. I'm a classic gamer so older graphics do not effect me. In fact I just ordered Raiden 3 for PS2 :).

Ok guys, forum is to share idea, information, and help. I know you guys are not sony. I'm trying to make it known to sony consumers, and to attempt to get helpful ideas at the same time! That is what a forum is for, right?

Anyway, maybe if someone can help me it would be great. Did anyone else experience this problem I have either before and/or after upgrade to 2.1:

I did upgrade to 2.1x. The game loads, but the screen is super shaky / wobbles.

I can choose a car and a track, then it stays at the loading screen forever.

?

Thanks for any positive input you have.

I'm not sure if this is your problem but the hdmi cable carries 1080p while component cable carries 1080i. It may be as LaBounti says also.

Yep I'm gonna have to retract my prior claim. I just tried GT4 again, set it in game to 1080i, drove a full arcade lap around the ring and everything displayed just fine. So I don't know what I had all fouled up before, but there are no problems now.

Thanks for any positive input you have.

Well it's nice to see you've finally calmed down a bit as I'm not certain how much was accomplished with your original rant. Regarding your request for input this link should help you determine what PS2 games will work with the 80GB model and what issues any particular title might have:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

Inputting GT4 for the 80GB model we get the following:
*Throughout the Introductory FMV sequence, the FMV plays at approximately 85% of the normal performance speed.
*During various Demo FMA sequences, the vehicles do not navigate the track as intended.
*Throughout gameplay, extraneous graphics randomly appear at the top-left corner of the screen.
*At a specific point during gameplay, the title hangs.
*During network gameplay, the title performs out of sync from other users.

For the record: Sony did not remove EE/GS hardware to reduce cost. Ignore Kotaku's ignorance:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/spin/jack-tretton-says-dropping-bc-wasnt-for-cost-measures-312628.php

Like I said Sony will say anything to make something seem like a good thing much like rumble. With that said Sony is not dropping backwards compatibility, just on the entry level system. Jack also said the E306 Killzone trailer was real time but then twisted it to make his wrongness seem right in 07.

(isn't "dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing") They do save something. It may not be dramatic enough to say its for saving money.

is that really your gamer tag :D

Sony can say whatever they want, but this is the reason they gave. Wikipedia says the removal of the EE is a reduction of only $27.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

Is that my gamer tag? I wish it was, it's just a joke. I'm enjoying my PS3, why would I spend $400+ on an electronic device that has such a high failure rate? People who are on their fourth, fifth, eleventh system are just delusional.

anione wiff 80gig ps3 runing 1080i on gt4? btw i love to mis spel on da inter web

You do realize that language without convention equals nobody gets to communicate with one another right? Well unless maybe you are a whale or a porpoise, so good luck flipper.

I guess I must give credit where credit is due, he did put together quite the post. Hey man you want to play some Call of Duty online, I am good to go for a while.
