6. Gran Turismo 4

Gran Turismo 4, the latest installment in Sony's wildly popular racing series, was supposed to allow PlayStation 2 racers to chase each other over the internet.

"Rabid fan" Seth Daam noted the game was originally promised in mid-2002. Then it was postponed to late 2003. Then early 2004. Then simply 2004. Now it's "the January-to-March window" of 2005.

"This title has been in development forever now, and a simple Google search reveals its impressive (and maddening) release history, dangled in front of this fan's greedy fingers like a carrot on a string," Daam said.

"Twelve more months of delay and they could release it for the PS3," said Peter Waldrab.

Adding insult to injury, Sony said in November that the game's online component would be dropped.

"I am tired of waiting," said Donnie Morrow.

I agree :)

well, the online play being dropped is the only legitimate complain i see, delays are common practice among any developer, and with PD you can be assured a delay isn't with out merit or because they are just lazy, they overwork, and always deliver eventually. But dropping a feature that they had allready put in the game because of worries of "ruining the GT experience" is just giving in to the whiners... (whiners that would complain that their game "looks wierd" when playing online when they play on a high latency connection.) there's even alternative methods that they didn't bother to include for those kind of people...
for me the fact that you can crash into another car in order to "brake" ruins it far more than "lag" ever will, and i'm sure any serious simulator fan would agree. why didn't they adress that instead?? oh yeah.. the whiners, if the game had the penaties enabled in all modes people would whine endlessly about how hard the game is because evry time they CRASH they get a penalty.
PD made compromises for the wrong kind of people, why? no clue, that's why they included B-Spec in the first place, because this time around the driving is going to be too challenging for the avarage joe.

aside from the BASIC online support (it's not like people were even asking for simulation mode to be available on multiplayer!, heck there's not even a garage for 2 player battles!). i have no other BIG complaints.
they could've included the basic multiplayer support (pretty much the same features that are available in LAN mode) and then if they really wanted an in depth online game they could go ahead and release the online version with full simulation mode on multiplayer, car trading, part trading, selling etc. tourneys and what not. but to me, and many other people GT4 is missing the most fun feature of them all... being able to play with more people on demand.

and for all the people that go "but GT has never had multiplayer! why do you want it!?"

i'll say this.. we've ALWAYS wanted multiplayer, but in evry other previous GT game it just wasn't possible, because of the following:

-GT1 was a PS game, not even a modem available for it.
-GT2 same deal.
-GT3 Sony made an extremley poor desicion (wich they kind of "rectified" with the PStwo) and opted not to include a built in network adapter (when even older consoles had it.. namely the Dreamcast).
-GT4... the Network adapter is for sale, and the new PSTwo has it included... and GT4 is pretty much the title evryone identifies the playstation with, and it's not included??? why not? people that don't care for it can just skip the option on the menu, and people that can't play it because of their laggy network could always even have the option disabled by software. but what about the rest of the people that have been waiting forever to play GT versus the rest of the world to see how their skills compare to them?
the answer is.. PD gave in, and screwd the competitive GT fan, all because they didn't want to confuse joe six pack....

This is a shame, because this is what out a doubt, the best sim PD has ever made, and even with this huge drawback i still can't wait to play it. (and look froward to having LAN battles... but those will be too few.. too far appart.)

there's always other stuff to put down GT4, but for the most part it's on a class of it's own. in most areas other games can only dream of matching it.

i don't care about online play

memory card battles, though...i care very much about.

don't get me wrong, GT4 is a GREAT game, but it could have been an AWESOME game with the memory card battles...now there's really no reason for me to drive one particular car around one specific circuit or what not to fine tune it cause aside from 1p races, i won't be able to compare my tuning skills with friends...

i played GT4 for about 60hrs in 5-6 days...but i've been playing World of Warcraft more since the magic sorta wore off.

:(

...and you are being forced to buy and play GT4. I think not, give it a rest.

not for sale :) it will collect dust looking pretty on my bookshelf LOL

i'm not saying i don't play it at all, it's just that for about an hr of GT4, i'm playing about 3hrs of WoW.

and to the person who said let the laptimes do the talking, for me personally, i find that i slam out much better times when there's the pressure of someone beating me in a race. also, laptimes don't really give you the satisfaction of telling someone "in your face" when they used a much better power-to-weight ratio car against you and such.

Number 6 on the Shame list? Why? Too many delays? Lack of "key" features? I agree with pimp daddy cool, PimpRacer. Do I have to remind people about Duke Nukem Forever? A game since 1997 at least. By then, GT1 was either in concept or already released. Now look at the Duke Nukem community. Not even "Manhattan Project" is keeping Duke fans happy. Not happy enough to bring a second coming of Duke Nukem, and yet people think GT4 is a disappointment? I tell you disappointments. The 2004 San Francisco 49ers winning only 2 games... 2 DAMNED GAMES out of 16. The 2004 Miami Dolphins without Ricky Williams. Driv3r. CatWoman, even with those cut scenes of her licking herself when not in play. "Big Rigs: Over the Top Racing" with the funniest message for winning a race, "You're Winner." And what does GT4 get for its troubles trying to at least finish a damned game since 2001? A notch on a Shame List.

I'm going to say this right now. If you're going to hate on Gran Turismo 4, make it some believable reasons. Not everyone has the same interests over a game. That means that a buddy who plays SOCOM all the time online and wants to play GT4 online, is no different from a regular person wanting to play GT4 even without online play. A person who wants European exotics is no different from a racer who wants to race anything and everything on four wheels. Account for everyone. Don't just follow the online gaming crowd or the nit-pickers crowd. Consider enthusiasts, racing game fans, Gran Turismo fans, and all that. At least I'm trying to keep the hopes up for some people who think all they're seeing is negative reviews. People still want to play this game, you know, myself included. So... of course, you don't HAVE to get GT4 if you don't want to. All I'm saying is, there's some good to this game that rants don't have to happen all the time. Consider everyone. Be thankful GT4's going to be released at all. Can you dig that?

I'd have actually prefered the CD space that would have gone to online mode to ahev gone to anything else. I seriously doubt that I would have used online mode at all......

But the delay after delay and still no confirmed release date for the rest of the world is poor. I hope SONY feel embarrassed about that article as they should.

its just stupid, so what the game had delays, bigger games tend to have delays which are also highlighted more. but look at all the work that is put into something like GT4. In my opinion i dont care if there isnt online play, look at everything else we get instead. Its better not to have online play than have more of a wait then the possiblity that it doesnt work well and have even more people b!£€h about it.

Sony and PD are very worthy of their spot on the list of shame. I can look past the delays, nearly every game has delays of some sort. But what I can't look past is their appaling lack of features. I know many people are right now thinking 'Lack of features? 600+ cars, Nurburgring and Lesarthe, Photo Mode, B-Spec mode' and so forth. But by lack of features I mean that they dropped online mode, which was by far the most anticipated thing in GT4 for me, as I wanted to take on the world in GT4. But, I can look past this, as XLink can make up for the lack of a true online mode, and still fill my racing needs. What really dissapoints me though, is the lack of garage battles. I am still completely perplexed as to why PD dropped garage battles. This has to be the most puzzling and confusing omission from a video game ever, since it has been a part of the GT series since day 1, and it is one of the game's most popular features. And, suddenly without any warning, it's just simply vanished without a trace. For me, the lack of a garage mode, especially in LAN mode (which I would use with XLink), has nearly killed the game and it's hype for me. The only shred of hope I have left for this game is that PD will spend a week or two puting the dearly missed garage battles into the European and North American versions of the game. Otherwise, I am going to let PD know I am not satisfied with their product by simply not buying it.

RUSSIATURISMO - If you agree, what are you doing in a GT4 forum? Wouldn't you rather be doing something else than hanging around a forum that has alot to do with something you don't like?

Look what happened when Sony rushed GT2 out. Talk about buggy as all get out.

But..but...we bought the game and played it aftre all? Didn't we?
I know I bought it. Looking back though, I wish it would have stayed in development a bit longer. I think I cryed when my first car became No Name No Name.:p
