Mods I know theres a LONG thread about tv and a lot of technical stuff i dont understand. I need advise fast please.

Tomorrow I plan on buying a small 17 inch HDTV/widescreen flat panel tv, http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Norc...sem/rpsm/oid/121408/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Will i be able to play GT4 in 1080i mode? I read that i have to buy component cables, Monster or Sony Component cables?
i also want to get 5.1 surround sound, will these cables work? what is that optical thing for the sound in back of ps2?

i know its a cheap brand but i dont want to spend above 500 on a tv for video games. 17inches is ok for my room size.

thanks in advanced

Yes, you will need component cables. Remember to set the PS2 at 16:9, and Component output. If you can swing the cash for the Monster cable, do so. I've got Sony cables and they've been fine for me.

No, those cables will not work for 5.1. You'll need an optical cable and a reciever that will accept the optical.

17" is a fine size.

As a further aside, GT4 automatically defaults to Normal viewing whenever you turn it on. You'll have to set GT4 to 1080i each time you turn the PS2 on. It'll stay at 16:9 though.

thanks bro. i cant wait to set it up. how much does receiver go for? what if i buy a logitech 5.1 system, doi have to use the optical or component cables?

I also saw another tv, 20inches max resoulution 800x(something i forgot).
NO widescreen, No HDTV...

Should i stay with the 17incher with HDTV and Widescreen, or the 20incher?

I believe, but I'm not certain, that the optical cable is for DVD movie sound only, not for games. GT4 supports Pro-Logic surround, but not 5.1. It's not that great, anyway, with a very abrupt transition from behind to in front. 1080i, on the other hand, is a very worthwhile feature.

The component cables carry video information only, you'll still need to hook up the audio cables. The component cable set (not to be confused with composite!) will have five cables, three for video and then left and right audio.

A non-HD TV will probably not have component inputs, the best choice there being S-Video. You won't have either 480p or 1080i support with a regular TV.

thank you for your help. Im going with you guys suggested and purchasing the 17inch HDTV,Widescreen. and im going to buy the sony component cables and the xbox components. I would buy the monster, but thats over 100 dollars in cables for 2 systems that are going to be replaced soon.

now i have to start looking for a low watt surround system (my room is small, dont need too much power)

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 1080i story doesn't apply to us europeans, now does it??

I have been successfully using an optical cable from the PS2 into my Onkyo receiver. I think you just have make sure the PS2 is set to Digital Audio ON

To confirm, using the optical out on the PS2 & connecting it to a Dolby ProLogic capable receiver is the way to go to get 5.1 sound (in addition to having the 5 speakers, and subwoofer of course.)

Component cables are required to get the 1080i High Definition version of the game.
If you run regular RCA Composite video cables on an ED (Extended Definition) or HD tv I have noticed the screen jitters at the beginning of a race but usually then goes away. With an ED tv and GT4 set to 480p or with an HDTV & GT4 set to 1080i this does not happen.

Look for the Monster PS2 component cables on eBay - they're plentiful. There's a kit that includes an optical (TosLink) cable as well. I think Monster calls the package GameLink GL400 or something like that.

Nope optical will carry everything

IAG,

That TV is not designed for 1080i. Read the specs, it says 1280 x 768. Thus it is designed for 720p format. Or, at least, that's how I understand TV specs.

The TV will have to convert 1080i to 720p (edit: which it ought to be able to do). I have a 42" EDTV (480p resolution) and I don't really notice any difference between standard, 480p, and 1080i outputs from the PS2. (except subtle color variations probably due to the TV's color decoder). GT4 looks great in all three formats.

For cables, I'd go for the cheapest component cables you can find. I use MadCat's universal cables. $15 in the US.

EricB (and others with experience using the optical),

Does GT4 actually take advantage of the 5.1 surround speakers? I mean, does it just send "ambience effects" back there, or can you really localize cars trying to pass you on the right from the Rear-Right speaker? Do cars swoosh by you from front to rear and left and right?

If they do... maybe I'll spring for more cables... tho I'd have to sacrifice some other digital output. Damn limited receiver inputs!

No, GT4 does not take advantage of Dolby Digital 5.1. What it does have is Dolby Pro Logic II which is analog. It's only slightly better than Pro Logic. The difference being the rear channels are full band audio instead of limited band.

IAG: Make sure you notice the component input on the monitor is Non-HD component. You might not like that if you plan on watching HD images from a different machine. However, you might still be able to get 1080i from GT4. It's not true HD, just up-converted 480i. Make sure you can return it if it doesn't do what you want.

Are you sure about that? I thought optical was for audio only. Not video.

No way. It only transfers digital audio; not even analog audio.

I think he means everything as in all sound, i.e. video game and dvds. I am using the optical out only for audio and works fine for all the games.

damn im so dissappointed first, i couldnt find that 17inch tv it was "discontinued" whatever. So i purchased this :http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pola...sem/rpsm/oid/119184/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

the salesperson told me it was widescreen after i asked him why it didnt specify on the box. well its not. I put gt4 in 1080 and in 16:9 and its all narrow, jaggyust looking. i take off the 16:9 ratio, and leave just the 1080 but it looks jaggy.

I bought the component cables for both xbox and ps2, Halo takes a while to load but looks BEAUTIFUL.

I feel like just returning the tv not because of the missing widescreen but because the 1080 looks so jaggy, on every game Rainbow 6,nba 2k5, gt, except on halo.

I just want to know why it looks soo jaggy on 1080? is there anything i can do?
should i get one with widescreen and no HDTV? i can find one that has both for under 500.
help please :guilty:

You gotta do your homework. Don't ask the sales staff any questions. They're idiots who don't know anything. You cannot depend on the manufacutre to answer questions correctly also. They're just as bad as any salesman.

If you checked the specifications, you would have seen it was not a widescreen HDTV set. So, take it back. Do better research and buy the one that will fit your needs and make you happy.
