GT4 Challenge: Nurburgring On A Budget

Started this on another forum, thought you guys would like it, as well.

Here's the challenge, Gran Turismo fans:
Car Rules:
1. Total cost must be at or under $50,000 Cr., including price of car, any oil changes or car washes, and all mods equipped on the car.
2. Car used must be able to be purchased straight up. No 'prize only' cars.
3. Tuningwise, anything else goes. No HP limit, no Tire regulations, no weight minimums.

Race Rules:
1.Quickest Nurburgring time for one single lap (which lap you record is your choice, doesn't have to be the first, slow-start lap).
2. Must be done in practice mode, without any other cars.
3. No riding walls, cutting corners, or misc. other bull****.
4. A-Spec mode only. If you're using B-Spec, you should be slapped.

General Rules:
1. Post your laptime and the car you used. If you want to keep it a secret, you don't have to post your mods, but we'd love to see them!
2. Multiple submissions are welcome if you find a new best, or just want to report what you got with a different car, or to compare your time with someone using the same car.
3. Obviously we're not all going to make videos or take pictures, so we're using the honor system for laptimes, budget spending, etc. DON'T BE A JERK.
4. Have fun, and no ****-talking.

My best so far is 6:41.018 in a '97 Toyota Supra RZ.
 
Dammit. I wanted some competition. :(
 
I want to get back into playing GT4 after quite a long break. I'm just learning to use my wheel, so my times are a bit crap, but once I get it set up, I'll try and give this a go.
 
7:22.738 in a '00 Mazda RX-7 RS

I suck at the 'ring, lol. The car's probably got another 5-10 seconds in it with someone who's great at the ring. How on earth did you manage a 6:41 the a big fat lumbering Supra?
 
Careful, I'm a Supra fanatic! ;) It has AWESOME handling and braking in stock form, that's how it held the production car 70-0 braking record for 12 years, and that's why it was so possible to get such a good time with it.
 
My fastest so far is a 7'25.xxx in an R32 GT-R N1. That was after trying a '91 RX-7 Type R, '99 R34 V-Spec N1 and a '99 S15 Spec R Aero.

I've got some other cars to try that I've already bought and need to tune. I also have a few in mind that haven't showed up in the used car lots yet. There's also a brand new car I saw that was pretty affordable and powerful.hehe I'll keep you posted.
 
I just managed a 7'24.931 in a '97 Camaro Z28. I bought it for 8,xxxcr and bought a supercharger, S3 tires, and full race suspension, among other things.

Not to be a jerk, but are you sure that you ran a 6'41.018, especially spending just 50k on a Supra? I'm not saying you're lying, but I would beleive that maybe you just made a typo. I just picked up a Supra myself, and at 21k, it doesn't leave a whole lot of money to play with, as far as mods go. I'll try modding one myself and see what happens.

I've got a fully-lightened and winged 914hp R34 GT-R on S3s and only managed a 6'53.xxx. Granted it was a sloppy lap with a few offs and only my first lap with that setup, but I probably wouldn't have gained 12 seconds even on a perfect lap.
 
7:05.915 with a TVR Griffith 500. It's probably got another 5 seconds, maybe a touch more in it with a flawless lap. B-spec could only pull off a 7:22.

I'm calling a tentative BS on that Supra time pending exact specs.

The Supra can be picked up for either 21xxx or 15,364. I used an oil change, R2 tires, 1st stage lightening, a wing, and nothing but power mods to fill the gap after that. Give it a shot. Don't buy anything but R2 tires for this challenge, any better is way too expensive, any cheaper is just tacking on at least 10 seconds.
 
I'll have to try out some R2 tires, then. I use S3s almost exclusively. I guess it's just from the rules I have for 2P battles with my friend.

I was waiting for a Griff to show up in the showroom. Guess I'll have to try something else. :ouch:

Fortunately, I've modded my cars in an interesting way. Most mods, with the exception of the lightening can be taken off and replaced with other parts. For example, I had three different configurations set up for my R32 GT-R N1: Stage 2 Turbo with S2s and suspension, Stage 1 Turbo with S2s and Semi-Race suspension and lastly, Stage 1 Turbo with S3s and stock suspension. The second setup worked the best for me.

I plan on removing the full-race suspension from my Z28 and going with R2 tires instead. I might still be able to afford a sports suspension, too. My R32 GT-R N1 might be a good bet too.

There's also a bit of a ringer that I found. It didn't do too well on S3s so I didn't bother with a full lap. I was kinda disappointed. On R2s though(hopefully I can afford them), it might be a different matter. :sly: I'll keep everyone posted.
 
The suspension mods are largely a waste of money for this challenge. Nurburgring, with all its bumps, requires a lot of suspension travel to soak up all the bumps so you dont go flying off the track every other corner. The sports suspension doesnt help that. I believe you are better off using all your money on tires, weight, and power power power.
 
^Indeed, handling is very important, but you're best to start with a "sporty" car and just give it R2s to fill in the gap, and with the loooong, fast corners, a wing is neccessary.
Just out of curiosity, do you drive an RX-7, Raptor?
 
^ I have owned two FB RX-7s in the past, but I don't currently own one. It's really dissappointing that they didn't include the FB in GT4, I honestly cannot figure out why. I mean they include the bloody Chrysler PT Cruiser for Christ's sake.

Oh, and I had another few laps in the Griffith and pulled off a 6:59.166

*edit* Holy crap! I took your advice about the wing, and what a difference! I had to axe the sports exhaust to keep under budget, but I got to add the wing and a racing flywheel in its place. What a difference! The car felt so much more planted around the quicker bends and under braking. My new time:
6:46.937

Whell,i am gonna join you guys,after i complete another 100 laps race.That means today :D.Interesting challenge 👍
 
I had picked out the HPA R32 as a bit of a ringer. There were quite a few advantages:
1. It was new, so the chassis had not been stressed and would perform at its best. With the exception of a 6.2 mile car, used cars will require the refresh option.
2. The car already had over 500hp. With an oil change as my only modification, I had about 540hp.
3. The car was also equipped with a semi-race suspension.
4. The price tag of 31,xxx cr allowed for another mod or two. I got the R2 tires and a wing.

Unfortunately, the car has a pretty odd suspension setup from the get-go. Under braking, the car likes to lock up and slide its tail. This is probably due to either a serious rear brake bias and/or some toe out in the back. I had to drive very conservatively just to stay on the track, and my best was only a 7'04.xxx.

That's the fastest I've managed so far in any vehicle, so this might be it for me. I might try something else once it show up in the used car showroom.
 
I was trying this with the HPA for a while. Best I managed was a 6:49, I think.

There's not much money left after that...what other mds did you do? Just added power?

Edit: After R3 tires, brakes, and an oil change, there's only 1845 left, not much that can be done with that. I'm calling BS on that time for now. Sure you didn't cut corners or ride walls or go over the budget? I've tried it a few times and can't get under 6:55 with that combo. I could see 6:45 on a FLAWLESS lap.
