bought a iLink FW hub and juz found out my friend's PS2 doesn't have iLink port on it. :banghead: Damn what I going to do now  ?
Seem like GT4 not going to support iLink, coz all the newer PS2 doen't have iLink port.
I know this have been ask before, any one have any update info/news on GT4 iLink?

I think we'll know when GT4 is for sale on the shelves. Until then it's all speculation.

The chances that GT4 will support iLink seem slim, although Kazunori told a French forum member at Le Mans 2003 that he thought he would support iLink after all. However, since more and more people won't have a PS2 with iLink port, you'll see the iLink HUB quickly being replaced by a standard UTP HUB and network adapters.

I bought two new PS2s just before the ilink port disappeared, just in case. That was a year ago, when I was assuming that we would by this time be playing GT4. But looks like we're stuck with iLink for at least half a year still, so tricky business.

There are more than 50-60 million PS2s out there with a iLink port though, so maybe just try to get hold of one of those cheaply - perhaps you can get someone's PS2 who thinks his laser is broken for very cheap, and then you can easily fix it yourself by cleaning and greasing the laser rails. :D

Dont see a reason for PD to use i-Link when the consoles (new ps2s) dont have it.
Soo, what would that mean? Well, the ones that dont have plans on playing it online, only offline (via utp hub) will be forced to buy a network controller anyway.. Thanks PD/Sony for making GT4 multiplaying cheap. :irked::rolleyes:

Well it doesn't sound logical, until you think about how many PS2s are out there with iLink ports, and how many PS2s are out there with network adapters. It could be quite some time until that figure even balances out, let alone make the number of iLink ports out there negligable. Also, the number of PS2s sold won't increase so fast any more, so it's not like the iLink port will ever be a minority feature.

Well since I bought a new silver PS2 with a DMS3 modchip & sold my old un, I don't have iLink either. Still that doesn't bother me when I'll probably be playing GT4 online anyway :)

Has there been any game with i-Link after Sony removed them?
Well, actually i think it sounds a lot more logical to only have the network adapter by the simple reason that the online will be via the network adapter. Think about it, use a standard ( i sure have used a lot in GT3) that will be suported by a majority of people but not the new ones.
Or, the network adapter that is supported by all ps2`s. Hmm.. What does really sound more logic?

Well. I guess its only wait and see..

I kind of think that stuff like the iLink is basically for places that actually have the resources and money. I mean, think about it. Just to play two others:

two PS2s turned on
two copies of [the upcoming] GT4
two or more different television sets

Now, an example of having different units playing each other is when I went to two different arcades. Last year, I been to the arcade at Pasadena Town Square in Pasadena, Texas. It had Sega Super GT (to me, the greatest arcade racing game of all time) with another dual unit. So, with certain connections, two dual Super GT units could link together and can all compete at once if they wanted to. It was probably meant for special arcade tournaments. This other one was a few years ago at the beautiful Galleria mall here in Houston. The arcade store around the Galleria skating rink and the big food court featured an arcade place with either 4 dual units or 8 single units of Daytona USA (another Sega game, if you're keeping track). So 8 units can compete at the same time if that was the case.

As far as iLink goes, I'll tell you one thing, GTPlanet. When it comes to questions like online play and iLink play, I'm not as experienced because I'm more old school, plus I'm not really big on them anyhow. One of the hottest multiplayer games I have is Unreal Tournament classic. So I've mostly played against the computer. Now, I like multiplay for some reason, but when it comes to GT4, I'm keeping to myself and maybe to anyone around my way to daresay challenge me to a race. Anyhow, my two cents and then some have been made.

GT4 will not have a iLink support, as Sony has diched iLink compatibility of PS2 forever.

However, it will have network support trough Ethernet Adapter for both online and offline play, which is IMHO a better solution. I guess that we'll still be able to connect up to 6 PS2 in network with classic LAN cables and play iLink battles (offline), only theey won't use iLink no more but LAN, and classic LAN hub.

It is much cheaper (iLink hub and cables cost around 110 euro, while LAN hub and cables are cheaper, and lot of people have them) but really it is not - and do not forget this - for playing GT4 in network you have to buy Network Adapter (from Sony, of course) which will allow you to connect PS2's for offline and to play online games on the web.

So, it is a very strategic move for making people buy Network/Ethernet Adapter, but it will allow you to play lots of games and it doesn't cost much. So, do not worry, we'll all have iLink only not trough FireWire port.

Heh, so i'm going to have a fairly useless (well to me at least) firewire hub and a load of cables sitting around.

I'm not bothered as long as they include a local lan play option.

just an OT question. have you tried playing any online games that use DNAS with your modded ps2? and if so, did it connect?

Actually iLink is superior to what the Network Adapter can offer. iLink is a better protocol with a guaranteed and stable datarate, which is why it is used for video applications, is 4 times faster on the PS2 than the Network Adapter (400Mbit vs 100Mbit), and is a lot easier to set up. Firewire is becoming a very good alternative for LAN parties, partly because it is so easy to set up. The irony ... Also, I found a place in the UK where you can buy a HUB for 24 quid (I bought my second one there a little while ago), so the price isn't really that big an issue either.

But it is true, many people have UTP kabels and HUBs lying around. And all the extra work for setting up networking and dealing with traffic inconsistencies will have to be done for online gaming anyway, so it's not a big handicap. But iLink works absolutely fantastic. We have never once had any delay and I have played 6 player iLink for many, many hours last year. There is no noticeable difference from playing all by yourself, except that he opponent cars behave a little more lifelike.

Any chance that GT4 support the new Firewire 800? Imagine 800Mbits... compare to old FW400 vs 100Mbits UTP connection :O

How much it cost for a sony PS2 network adaptor?

Lets say I bought two network adaptor and a network hub to connect two PS2, will GT3 iLink battle work ?

No not yet since I don't have a Sony Network adapter thing (GT4 isn't out ;) ) but you can disable the chip by turning PS2 power on (@ back) then pressing the eject button for a second or two which boots the PS2 with the modchip disabled (Think thats right, I know I've disabled chip before). With the DMS3 disabled your supposed to be able to play any online PS2 game (aslong as its original). :) Not sure about other modchips though.

And Arwin 100Mbits should be more than enough for lan games of GT4. Infact 10Mbits should be perfectly managable if the net code is any good, which it will need to be if people go online, not many people have 100Mbit connections ;))

I have 100mbit. :p

We don't all live in the ghettos.
