slo-car
for everyone that is butt-hurt that they didn't make it: Try harder
"Try Harder" - easier said then done.
A camera is not like a racing car - there is no limit to explore, you can't be any better by doing endless laps. Yes, practise helps, but sometimes you need a bit of luck too. I spend quite some time composing shots, adjusting everything to get a good, intelligent angle on things. But I stand the same chances as someone who just bashes the select button at a random point, goes "ooh thats nice", and hits the X button. I'm sure not everyone does this, but you get the idea.
It's meant to be art... and art teachers are not supposed to give bad grades just because they don't like it. It's about all those things that were mentioned - those are what make truly great photos. But many a blind eye has been turned.
EDIT: an example....
My Nismo doing a bit of an outrageous powerslide. The car is on the right of the photo to emphasis the sideways left-to-right movement. Slow shutter speed to give some sense of speed and to ensure the wheels look like they are spinning.
I positioned the camera to include the MOTUL sign, since the car is MOTUL sponsored. I also put the camera to the height to make the yellow/black arrow appear above the rear of the car, but not so high to keep the sweeping effect and to put the horizon near the centre. Finally, to enhance the view of the drift, the camera angle was positioned to almost align with the front wheels, so as to show how sideways the car was, but still not so far round as to obscure the MOTUL sign greatly. Bit of a balancing act.
That's photography.
