Wow, 20megs. I hadn't realised it would be that big...

Well, as you say, there's considerably more detail on the higher res picture, but it does take more time to view the component images (zooming and scanning the final image takes longer). Now that I've had a chance to look at the two side-by-side, personally I feel keeping it at the 40x40 is the better move. It's more true to the format of a photomosaic, as you say, but there's still plenty of detail (at least to my eyes).

Yea, I didn't realize there would be such a difference in file size. When I first saw that it was 20 megs, I thought I accidentally saved it as 12,800x9,600! But they are both 6,400x4,800. I think it has something to do with the way images are compressed...the fewer drastic changes (like the border between images), the better, maybe. It also might have something to do with the fact that I used a different program to splice the 4 parts of the 80x80 together and it may save at a different quality setting than the original render. If that's the case, then coding it into the program instead of splicing them externally would reduce file size.

Hello lads! It`s been a while since my last post. Unfortunetly, I have lost the passion for the GT4 :( and in the moment of borness, I have come to again to this site, and than I saw this thread. Whell, what can I say, amazing. I can only beg the ZZII to take my photos as well. PLEASE TAKE THEM AND USE THEM IN YOUR MASTERPIECE :) thanks in advance
cheers lads!

Here's my opinion.

40 x 40 isn't good enough clarity.

80 x 80 is great clarity, but then you have a couple drawbacks.

So why not 60 x 60? It makes the most sense to me, a compromise.

Anyway the new stuff looks great 👍

I have been avoiding a resolution change ever since I wrote this program, but I finally decided to just do it. It turned out to be a lot easier to code in than I thought, and I was able to make it completely variable so that we can now render anywhere from 40x40 to 60x60. (80x80 seems to be too much...the small pics are too small.) The only problem I ran into was that 6400/60 does not work out evenly, so I was getting black lines in between rows at regular intervals. Simple solution: stretch each picture one pixel further to cover up the black lines. Now some rows overlap by one pixel, but that is not noticeable and is much better than having black lines. The key text also had to be made smaller to fit in the images, another quick fix.

So here is the first official hi-res 60x60 render with key:

test1_60_small.jpg

Full-Size Image (still 6400x4800...4.86 MB, I guess file size is not a problem when it's coded-in)

Image Credit Key: Picture / Text

With the ability to render 60x60 now, the "light and tight" rule can probably be ignored. (Although light still works better...we just don't have that many dark pictures, so there are too many repeats. Anybody have a dark gallery? :) ) So, we can pretty much render anything now. As always, send me any suggestions!
