According to several rumours and reports I have read GT4 will have a rev limit kick in for a few seconds after you have run onto or across the grass on the side of the track.
Is this a good or bad thing?
IMO this could really destroy the game for me its completely unrealistic and puts me in mind of cacky old racing games from the past like Out-run and the like, the fact that the GT series didnt have to rely on this in the past is what has made me such a fan of the games.
Is there anyone with prologue who can confirm if this feature is in the game?

I dont think that going onto the grass should slow you down. I do think that GT3 was too forgiving of it though, considering you could run wide on a corner into the grass and turn at full speed on it. I think the grass should be made really slippery in GT4, so that if you do run wide, it will take alot of skill to keep the thing in control.

No, it's different than you have heard. In Prologue, at least, you get a 50kmh max speed for 10 sec. after you ram a rival car or a barrier, but it has to be a significant hit. You can still trade a decent amount of paint. However, in some of the license tests all you have to do is touch a car and you fail, but that makes sense in a license test.
The 10 sec. penalty I think is a good place to start as long as it can diffrentiate who is at fault. I don't want to be penalized if someone brakes too early or rams me from behind.

What is needs is an automatic transmission limit like 355 challenge. Early shifts late down shifts. only for cars that dont come in automatic.

Well I don't think they should do that. Making the grass slippery as has been said would be far more realistic & won't seem tacked on.

I personally think the 50kmh limit in GT:P is stupid, why not just make impacts slow the car down realistically in the first place? Yeah the ideas right, but its lazily implemented & damages realism imo :( even a black flag would be better.

I thought the reduce speed was the black flag penalty. In an article I read with Yamauchi, he said GT4 would have this type of penalty system. If you hit the wall, or hit another car, a black flag would pop on he screen and your speed would reduce to 50kmh for 10 seconds.

What I don't like about this penalty system is the performance of the AI cars in GT3. They brake to late for my taste, and I would ram into the rear of them if they were ahead of me. I set the brakes very heavly on my cars, and that means I can brake a lot later than them. If the performance of the AI cars in GT4 are the same, I'm going to be penalized a lot. I would then have to set up my car to the way the AI cars are set up and I don't like that at all.

For you GT4p players, is there a black flag anywhere in the game?

It's been done before - GP3 and, I think, GP4, hands out penalties in a similar fashion. It's a pain the backside, as you're quite liable to be rear-ended (which when you have breakages on is a bit of a problem!).

TOCA2 used to hand out warnings - if you copped three you'd get points deducted.

I think what would be best would be copping a drive through penalty such as the ones given in v8supercars. If you were to do something unsporting, you would have to pit in and drive through pit lane without actually having to pit

And possible a stop go penalty for where at the end of pit lane where you'd be released from the pit lane speed limiter, you'd have to come to a complete stop and then leave pit lane but enforse this only for servier penaltys.

But like said above, you'd have to make sure the player was clearly in the wrong, and if its anything like v8 supercars, the stewed get it wrong plenty of times ;)

Here Here. It's a simulation so why not simulate the penalties?

I'm looking forward to it for the two player value; It will stop irratating cheats using walls and cars to their advantage and claiming they're a better driver. Non-drivers like that should be punished they ruin it for the true enthusiasts.

hmmm, i think that a 10sec 50kph limit would be a bit unrealistic....because, Gran Turismo is a simulation game and that does not happen i the real world. I think the gravel traps out side the corners should slow u down alot more that in gt3 and the grass should be alot more slippery. I know there is likely no chance of having any damage that u can see, but i think it would be good if just say u were riding along the wall u would damage suspension compents etc...this would aply to all kind of crashes and such that u could have, and a flag sytem where u may have to do a stop go penalty for ramming AI cars would be alot better

The main reason for something like this coming into the game is online play. Unfortunately we all know there are losers who will wall ride and ram you online and get no penalty for it. We all know folk can wallride certain places of certain tracks and gain a major advantage. This would mean they are gaining rank points and perhaps the fastest times in the world would end up being wall ridden. In this respect something has to be done to stop it.. I don't see a problem with a limit on wall hits and I don't see a limit on car hits if the impact is large and not your fault.. providing the AI is better I wouldn't mind being penalised for the AI hitting me, after all that's totally realistic... If someone drives into the back of you, it's gonna cause your car some grief too! :)

The GP series carried off grass cutting and car hitting black flags quite well... limited your speed to try and limit or prevent the advantage you gained from it and it worked very well..

I want to be sure when i'm racing online that those I'm racing against can't just cheat and beat me.. they definitely need some sort of penalties.

Exactly what I was saying execpt I didn't realise it was particularly for online play.

i agree they need some kind of penalties in place, but getting penalised for hitting the wall with 10sec of 50km/hr is absolutely ridiculous!Like someone has already said isnt hitting the wall gonna slow ya down enough anyway? But concerning cutting corners along grass or dirt they should adopt wrc3 approach by making the wheels spin noticeably and slown the car down>It doesnt mean that the car would have to spin out of control but enough to disable you to keep on cuttn corners>

What I don't like is the fact that if I touch a wall on Citta de Aria I get a 10 sec. penalty, but if I go straight across the chicayne or cut the second big corner at Fuji, nothing happens.

Part of the issue in GT3 is the damn AI cars will ram YOU from behind at max speed. Especially if you are on a different line then they are and have different braking points which is usually the case given how bad the AI's lines usually are. Will GT4P/GT4 take this into consideration?

All i know is that they're (PD) more busy with slipstream now, so you have to take another line if the one on your back is in the slipstream. The AI is smarter, like they're not driving in one big group, but they are intaking while they have the chance, even with other AI cars!:)

I think Ubiquitous is right this is becuase of online play Polyphony must be making sure the lack of cheats in the GT series is carried through to 4 even with online races but I would definately prefer drive through penaltys and black flags to poxy rev limits.
I think something subtley exists in previous GT games like this anyway in my experience you seem to lose time if you brush the walls anyway. Anyone agree?

A long, long time ago, I got Indy 500 with a soundblaster original.
In that game there was simulation of yellow flags, so if there was a crash the yellow flag came out and you crawled around for a few laps.
It is boring as boring can be.
If they're going to simulate a small black flag penalty, fine. But I don't want to spend endurance races travelling at 80km/h because some AI car can't keep on the track

I used to have a game on the gameboy called Bill Elliot Nascar racing or something and yes it had the same thing with a couple of laps behind the pace car- very boring.
But drive throughs or stop/go penaltys would be better.

slippery grass and boggin kitty litter are the way to go me thinks. a stop go penalty would be good for rammers too :)

I seem to remember GT1 and 2 having much more realistic grass and sandtraps deep forest could be a real ***** if you went of line in something rwd n powerfull.

You do lose time for touching walls gently in certain situations... but on certain courses you can go full throttle into hairpins and 'wallride' around the edge... taking the corner at an insane speed and getting an immensely fast exit speed too which sends you potentially seconds ahead of people who corner it normally. This is what needs to be stopped for online play... running off on the grass needs to be stopped too... if they just slow you down for a few seconds or so after placing more than two wheels onto the grass that'd work nicely :)

As for AI cars, you only get a penalty if you hit them, not if they hit you. At least that's how it is in GT4 Prologue right now.

Real justice!:)

I didn't know there were other hollanders here!:D

If the person passes for postion then they should lose engine power until the car they passed gets its position back. If not then let them deal with the sand or the grass. If they abuse the wallride then they get DQ'd.

That's how I'd do it.

I like the penalty idea, but it got to be realistic, otherwise it will just cause a lot of frustration (already got enough of that thanks to my driving ;)).
