To put it simply we've got two slimlines and GT4 only works on one of them. On the one that plays it there are no issues at all with playing gt4 or any other game. On the one that does not play gt4 there are no problems playing any other games but when you put gt4 in it it will not load anything not even the ps2 menu it simply stays on a blank black screen. When you open the lid it will load the ps2 menu but when you close the lid it just sits there saying reading disc but never loads it and it doesn't say can't read disc or any other things. I have two copys of gt4 and it does the same thing with both. Both have been buffed recently. I took the PS2 into the game store and the woman there tried several different copys of gt4 and it wouldn't play any of them yet it would play any other game just like I said. I just bought this PS2 and the store won't give me my money back as they don't do cash refunds and its the only ps2 they have.

Does anyone have any idea why this one system won't play gt4 and the other identical system does?

How can a store NOT give you a refund for an defective item? I'd talk to the manager and threaten legal action.

I was talking to the manager. Its a new and used game store and they only do store credit. I don't like it either and I wanted to test the system before buying it but the guy gave me a line about how they do that before selling them. Its a used system but I've been going to this store for a while so I kinda trusted them.

I was thinking it might be something to do with the model slimline it is but they checked and said that wasn't it.

Any other reasons it wouldn't play?

Get your money back through store credit, buy some games, resell on eBay, go buy a working PS2.

My regular PS2 had the same trouble, it stopped playing GT4 but played all other games just fine. i chocked it up to the fact that gt4 is the only game i have thats on a dual layer dvd, and a dying laser. many people seem to concur with that asumption. bottom line, your used PS2's laser is to far gone to read a dual layer DVD, get rid of it.

and if you dont like Ebiggs idea how about you just sell it back to the store? you wont get what you paid for it but it'll be cash. take it to annother location so they dont know your having problems with it or have somone else go in and do it.

Yeah I was thinking about selling it back to them however I already know they'd only give me $60 when I paid $118 with tax. I may very well do that though and just learn from my mistake.

Thanks for pointing out that issue that seems like it could be the problem.

My GT4 only works very occasionally.
I've cleaned the disk, I've blown the dust out of the machine.
It still takes about 20-50 load attempts to get it to work.
It pisses me off, but I'm working my way thru Ace Combat Zero, which rocks.
So, now I go fast in various warplanes.
Bonus: I get to blow stuff up!

Update:
Have cleaned the laser with alcohol and a q-tip.
GT4 works again!!!
Hooray!!!
