Loading / RTA Time Testing
Miscellaneous Tests / Findings useful for the Speedrun
  • RTA menuing comparison of buying a car vs getting into a car from the garage
    • Even with the added menuing needed to go to garage, buying a car takes a significantly longer time loading the purchase and getting into the car. Only instances where buying a car would be quicker is if you're within the country of origin already AND the use of credits won't affect later purchases in the route.
  • RTA menuing/race comparison of using a stock car vs buying parts for the car
    • Important information: The quicker the car is initially will show a lower IGT difference compared to the car with performance parts installed. Also, shorter duration races will yield an even greater advantage to stock cars RTA. Although, in 95% of the races installing performance parts to a car will be the quickest overall RTA.
  • RTA menuing/race comparison of buying certain parts for the car vs buying all parts for the car
    • Even though maxing out (buying all the parts for the car) will make the car the quickest it can go there is only 3 mandatory parts needed for the car to be overall RTA quicker. 1, Highest HP Turbo/NA Tuning available. 2, NOS. 3, Highest rated tire that can last the duration of the longest race. 70% of the time this method will suffice. Other scenarios either need more parts or different parts to be fully optimised in terms of RTA. As to achieve maximum efficiency I've tested every car and part combination to ensure the quickest RTA for every race.
  • RTA menuing comparison of leaving NOS value at default vs changing NOS value
    • In most cases leaving the NOS default yields a greater RTA improvement due to extended use as well as no menuing. Only specific cars (very low HP, wheelie glitch cars) need this setting changed to see RTA improvements.
  • RTA menuing comparison of leaving car settings default vs putting a setup on the car
    • Only 17 cars over the entire speedrun will benefit RTA-wise with a setup. Every other car will be quicker without a setup.
  • RTA menuing comparison of getting an oil change vs not getting an oil change
    • The menuing needed to go to GT Auto, purchase and wait for the oil to change, and then go to the race lost RTA in almost every car except the ones where they did endurance races. The boost in HP benefitted IGT's before the oil became 'worn' actually improving overall RTA. (Side note: The Formula Gran Turismo does not lose HP or body rigidity ever)
  • RTA menuing comparison of getting a wing installed vs leaving stock
    • There are only certain cars that benefit from acquiring a wing from GT Auto. In the speedrun, there isn't more than 3 cars that would lower RTA from the extra menuing. (Side note: The Nissan R390 GT1 Road Car has the ability to install a wing and can surprisingly have comparable down force to most Group C/LMPs/GT cars. Also, a few race cars can have wings fitted to them for additional downforce)
  • Menuing
    • Pressing 'Start' at the Home Screen will open up the cars setup sheets
    • Pressing 'Select' while in the setup sheets will bring up the cars HP/Torque curves graph
    • While in GT Mode pressing L1 will take the cursor to the Home Icon
    • While in GT Mode pressing R1 will take the cursor to the Country Icon of the car that you're currently in
    • You can not stack inputs while in a loading or transition screen
    • While on a race screen you can scroll past the last icon, either left or right, and it will take the cursor to the other side
    • In Mission Challenge races you can press start on the Finish Line and skip the standings leaderboard (this is very difficult and is frame perfect but can save ~6 seconds per Mission Challenge)
    • In Mission Challenges pressing 'X' is how you progress after the display showing the standings leaderboard
    • When skipping a race in a Championship you must enter the race then back out to go to the next race
    • When in 'Garage' finding a car go to 'Acquired Date' then scroll up quicker using directional up button and left stick. Go to car list then go left to find car really fast bro

        • Screen hue/colour tones to reduce eye fatigue
        • Background lighting to monitor lighting
        • Blurriness of vision after extended periods - will higher monitor resolution help reduce problems later in speedrun, can the game be upscaled from 480p to anything higher without jagged lines being more obvious
        • Keeping all monitors the same resolution to prevent the extended strain of refocusing from one to the other

  • Hardware
    • New vs worn PS2 laser RTA comparison
    • Logitech G27
      • Rewire an extension lead from wheel base to an easily accessible location to quickly change pedals out due to failure or 'pedal sticking'
        • Pedals give false inputs when dust gets into the potentiometer. The cable to connect the pedals to the wheel base is underneath where the wheel is bolted to the desk. In order to gain access it would need to be removed from the desk to change out the pedals. With this extension lead it would reduce time in only needing to re-bolt the new pedal set.
      • Rewire an extension lead from wheel base to the shifter to quickly change out due to failure
      • Redesign how wheelbase is attached to desk for a quicker changeover due to failure
      • Redesign location and how PS2's will be stacked to quickly change from the frozen/failed PS2 to the new PS2
        • At least 3 PS2's will be stacked within reach so the component cables, wheel USB and memory card can be quickly changed over from the failed PS2 (#1) to new the PS2 (#2)
          • The new PS2 (#2) will have a GT4 disk already inside and powered on at the Main Menu screen awaiting the memory card. When the memory card is switched into the new PS2 (#2) GT Mode will be selected after loading the run will continue where the last save was performed before failure.
          • The failed PS2 (#1) GT4 disk will be changed over to PS2 (#3) and then turned on awaiting for the same scenario if PS2 (#2) fails
        • Design should prioritise airflow between each PS2 to reduce the likelihood of overheating. Ease of accessibility is also major to the design

;) Useful Information ;)

Notes placeholder:
  • Motegi 8H / Sarthe 24H Ai Glitch research
  • Tire wear on tarmac vs grass
  • Track Region splits
  • 'Cone Break' using cones to break walls, needs research
  • Loading screen with red spinner; can the hardware be fixed? Can it be changed, the disk with another if it doesn't load? Can the laser be adjusted if it doesn't load? Any of these scenarios be done to not reset the system? If can be done, how much time does it take to remedy vs resetting the system and doing the races over again from last save?

I've decided to speedrun a few different categories to help practice for the 100% run. I'll post videos here when completed to reference improvements made over time during preparation.
