Hi everyone I'm sure there are many people out there like me who miss the A-Spec point quest that we had back in GT4. I've just completed (Gold) all of the Special Events and Licenses which were mostly competitive and enjoyable races. I have read that like it's predecessors GT5's A-Spec races are limitless and it's rather easy to defeat the ai with a monster car.

In an effort to take the "grinding" out of the game my thought with this thread is to try and compile a database with the lap times and total race times that it takes to have competitive races with the ai cars for all of the A-Spec races.

Hopefully we can get a nice discussion going about what information we'd like in the database and get help from everyone who thinks this would be useful to add the information into the database. I was thinking about using a Google Docs spreadsheet to keep all the information tracked. I've started tracking times in a Google Docs Spreadsheet.

I figure that there are two ways people can help

A) Run a clean race, as to not obstruct the ai, with whatever car you want and wait for the lead ai car to finish then record the total time. Go back to the replay and check the lap times of the lead ai (or fastest ai as it may be).

B) Go into the race and pull over off the track, as to not obstruct the ai, let the race finish then quit out and get the lap times and total time from the replay. Replay mode does not show you an exact total race time, though you can get close by pausing right as the lead car finishes the final lap or get the exact time by adding the lap times.

Notes: Obviously the above could be pretty daunting for the endurance races though I'm pretty sure we could gage them by the end of the first stint when the last ai car pits. Having the pit strategy information seems like a pretty important piece of information for this guide/database as well.

Here is the link to the preliminary spreadsheet, though I'll concede that there is only one race recorded at this time.

Very interesting results I just got while doing a test. I ran 1 race where I pulled over and let the ai finish and captured the result during the replay. Afterwards I went and "pushed" the lead ai car around the track staying on his tail and he drove much more aggressively posting almost a 20 second better lap time with me in toe compared to not having an opponent to deal with. It would appear that the ai, like you can set bob to do, drop their pace without any compeition near them.

We'll certainly have to relook at how to get the information we're after with this database, perhaps having b-spec bob in toe will press the lead ai car enough to maximize his lap times?

First race with me "watching"

1'19.xxx opening lap
1'34.xxx 2nd lap
1'35.xxx 3rd lap

Second race with me in toe

1'22.xxx opening lap
1'16.xxx second lap
1'17.xxx third lap

Quite a difference in total race time.

Maybe a database of cars + setups to use in the A-spec races and have a competitive race could also be useful.

Race the FGT Championship and tailgate. You'll notice the AI literally takes off out of corners, seems they get on the accelerator rather quick, they begin to pull away from you.

Pass them.. and it's a different story.. you're about 20sec ahead.

How accurate of times are you looking for? I know a few rough times off hand like the Indy 500 race where the lead cars lap in 45-46 seconds.

Essentially thats what I'm looking to do, though the setup part and car selection would really have to be left up to the players discretion. For example take a look at the WRS right here on GTPlanet, I'm a division 1 driver and a car that one of the D1 Gold Aliens would use to make it competitive would probably result in a loss for me. If we list the target time anyone can take a few cars to practice mode and see what type of car/tyre choice they would need to be competitive.

Yeah thats a very interesting and tricky point you make. To setup a "competitive" environment you'd have to base it off of those quicker lap times and pick a car/setup that allows you to best match that. Like you said if you blow by them and pull away they'll put it back to cruise mode.

I mean to start the database any information would be helpful and as we get deeper into it I think it'd be nice to have multiple times since the pack will be different for everyone. That way you can prepare a setup that is balanced and should be able to compete with a decent margin of the randomly generated field.

Ok, I see, makes sense.

Sandy has sent in quite a few times that I have added to the database. Thanks Sandy!

I'm wondering if you need to also time the A.I. with you in the lead just slightly. Stay a few hundred yards ahead of him and see if you can get him to run quicker laps. I've found the A.I. can run god-like laps to catch up to you.

BTW, There is another spreadsheet that helps with picking appropriate A-spec cars on this thread. it uses the power/weight ratio to match things up.

Awesome idea! Bookmarked, thanks!
I'll post a few times myself when I next play GT5.

I've looked a couple times for this database you were talking about. Can you link it?
