check out this beautiful video- and at the 2:22 mark, you can see what I'm talking about.

I don't mean this in a cynical, or malicious way, (as I abhor when another human being gets injured in any way, shape, or form) but when playing a racing sim, something just feels good about seeing a competitor's car in the sand. When playing other racing games, (diRt and GRID do some fantastic work in this area) it automatically puts a smile on my face to see the A.I. crash in front of me.

I believe that this feeling would be enhanced even further after doing another lap and seeing the safety crew loading up his car on the hauler. I already know that some of you are going to lambaste me for stating my thoughts in this forum, but it's just something I feel. A pace/safety car and cleanup crews wouldn't hurt would it? Maybe have the option to turn them on/off- It would surely add to the realism/raceday immersion aspects of our favorite Time-Trial Simulator, no?

{ducks a flaming tomatoe}

It would be nice, but I'm sure people would rather PD focus on cars and tracks. Nice idea though.

you know, thats an interesting argument. We have a thousand cars and 25+ unique tracks- would the playability/longevity of these items be expanded by increased immersion and fun factor? I will humbly admit that a few hundred of these thousand cars are interesting only to Kazunori, but that's another discussion altogether, lol..

The addition of competitive A.I. alone would likely do the trick... I just felt I had to post my thoughts, for without this forum- I don't think we'd have spec 2.

:gtpflag:

Would be better if GT5 were an actual simulator and the people buying it knew every race flag and how to be a pro driver. Because you realize as soon as a safety crew enters the track, there's going to be a full-course caution, with a pace car and a speed limit--all that distance you gained on the guys behind you gone instantly. Also no passing under the caution, which could last a while depending on the damages.

I hate to bring up iRacing every change I get but they did do some things to make their game more seamless and fun and fair, and one thing is they replaced the idea of a full-course caution with imposing "repair" and "tow" times on the damaged driver. Meaning they instantly reappear in the pits but they have to pretend to wait for the tow driver to get them back to their stall (a few minutes usually) and for their crew to repair the damages (could take a while depending).

Don't think this would work in 3-5 lap races, though.

A couple of the old Sirus (SP/name) NASCAR sims did it back in the late 90's. But you're crossing the lines between sims and a game at that point.

Or it could be an off/on feature. I would love to see it. Or in some cases of Endurance races a full course yellow.

A a sim racing enthusiast I would welcome anything and everything that's more realistic and adds to playability. At least as an option. Just wanted to point out in reality it's not always great news for everyone when a driver gets stuck in the kitty litter or sustains damage heavy, especially for the race leaders. 👍

This would be a great opportunity for PD to create some cool license tests that could bring everyone up, or more accurately down to speed. :)

Yes, that is an excellent point and the need for the option to turn realistic, full-course cautions on or off would help us out. As you see in the video- a partial-course caution could certainly happen as well, hopefully with some sort of penalty imposed if you blatantly zoom by with no regard for the flaggers. Mind you, this crew was able to get to the crash site without driving around the track by using a side-entry. Most tracks have these, I believe- this becoming irrellevant if the accident scene takes up the width of the actual track.

That would be awesome. Good stuff. We would need those few minutes to be reduced to seconds in our little 3 lap sprints, for sure- but I like how that sounds. Also- the option to turn on/off full disablement of cars involved in big crashes could add a new dimension for those looking to mimic reality. I'd go for it.

Anything beats bouncing off the wall like a basketball and continuing on like nothing happened. What part of racing is that?

Try not to crash, I hate to crash my car, one of the reason being hate to watch in the replay that my car has some dent or look deformed

A little off topic, but did anyone see the fairly large GT logo at 4:35? It must've been added recently, as I just checked for it in the game and didn't see it.

I wonder if PD slapped that on there specifically to include it in future textures of the track :)

These would all be great features to have but there's simply not enough RAM left in the PS3 to handle these things. The reason other games can do it is because they skimp on the graphics and physics which frees up memory for all that stuff. PD puts their focus on making the graphics/physics as good as they can and then squeeze in whatever they have room left for. And I'm totally fine with that. :)

deba94- that is a heck of an eye. Good spot.

I just want to say that 'trying not to crash' is more important in real racing than most anything else. Should we not be able to practice that philosophy while enjoying this game? I'm sure Kaz's "vision" does not include us all going to the real racetrack and behaving like a good part of GT5's online racers do.... maybe the bumper-car method needs to be looked at more closely, and given a right BOOTING.

This opens discussion on a whole different problem with GT5: Do other games skimp on graphics? Or does Kaz go way further than he needs to? Could a possible balance be struck somewhere in between? The physics I would never have a problem with using too much RAM- but physics aside, graphics only, there is so much energy going on with a GT5 cars' skin that a visible energetic aura emanates and the formerly decent shadows are disrupted to a crippling extent. This makes me feel sorry for PD- other devs surely had a laugh upon witnessing that for the first time. I myself thought, "damn, what were we being shown in all those preview videos for the last 3 years?"

You go into game production fully aware of what the hardware can handle. Mr. Yamauchi decided that the skin of the car will trump most everything else, including the shadows and smoke effects which surround said skin, rendering his actual goals of pure glistening beauty dead-on-arrival. :grumpy: Is that not what happened here? If your mind is not completely washed, it's downright obvious.

No experience in gaming history could match the sterility of GT5. And racing, you know- what the game is supposed to be about, is never sterile.

PD would model the track's safety crew and each person would be 500,000 polygons.

I hope the safety crew looks better than the sheep.:)

lmao! you guys ain't right

Yeah I agree, GT5 would have a more realistic feel if PD added this feature in the game. After the GT5 2.0 update, the A.I. Is all over each other and you so there's a possibility that an accident can occur.

After a said crash, on the map a red glowing dot will indicate where the accident is located, the cars (yours or AI) will not drive anymore for at least a few moments until you and/or the other car(s) transport to the pits, to get repaired before heading back to the racing action.

This is a great idea from the OP!! 👍

Slightly off-topic but I would love to see Safety/Pace cars in the game, both fantasy and/or preferably real. Have either one that's based on a car that is sold in all three main areas (Europe, Japan, North America) or three being divided between them by one.

Examples:
Nismo GT-R R34 Gran Turismo Pace car (JP)
Camaro Pace Car (NA)
BMW M3 Pace Car (EU)

and/or

Nissan 370Z (JP/NA/EU)
Lexus ISF (JP?/NA/EU)
etc.

Then you could have a pace car race!

They wouldn't because even we know that we'd end up running marshals over to see what happens. So then PD would need to make them dodge the car. Like in WRC: Rally Evolved, there were crashes from other cars (you'd have to dodge the broken wreck) and there were things like random trees that fall onto the track. PD needs to go down that road.

I think that safety crews would make a great addition to the game. It would make the endurance races more realistic when a pace car comes out when there has been a huge wreck.

Safety crews and pace cars would be nice. Especially at night in the 24 hours endurances, I can imagine that it would look spectacular.

About running over crews, just make it so that you can just drive through the people without anything happening (the point is that the crew are there, you're not supposed to run over them so we don't need any fancy dodging mechanics). The trucks should be pretty solid though...

Excellent post. Crashing into the trucks should be possible, but not the men. We have GTA V coming soon if you want to participate in vehicular manslaughter.

Thanks for all of the support guys- I'm a bit shocked that the perpetual naysayers haven't swarmed on this topic! We actually seem to be having a productive discussion here. ____ Positiiiiiiiiive !

{peeks over the wall wondering where the tomatoes are} :p
