I hve been playing the game almost every day since I purchased it back when it was released. However there is one thing that has been driving me nuts about GT5. The sound!!!!! How hard would it have been to make the exhaust sound effects a little more realistic?
I've heard people say that they think the exhaust notes are spot-on. Are they hearing impaired? I'm no programmer, but the P1 and group C cars sound nothing like they should Listen to these P2,P3, and GT class cars.

The sounds are a bit... generic in GT5

I loved the lumpy idle you got with the stage 3 engine tune in the older games (thanks to the camshafts) but they failed to include it in this game.

How about just the straight fact that a fully modified 1970 426 HEMI has almost the exact same exhaust note as a fully modified MX-5 4cyl.

I've noticed that the engines sounds a bit different depending on the view you are using.

The third person view seems to sound more realistic, but I hardly use that view. I normally use the front view, and everything sounds very similar to me in that view, like the car's screaming, really.

I have ****** TV speakers though. I just presumed that it sounded better on a decent sound system.

It's been an issue for over a decade, mate. I give PD some props because with some of the cars in GT5, they really have made more of an effort to get a more accurate sound. Most of the cars though, just don't seem to have the same level of effort and sound rather generic than unique to the actual car.

The only cars, in my opinion, that have great engine sounds are the Jaguar XJ13 Race Car '66, the Ford Mark IV Race Car '67, and the Mazda 787B Race Car '91.
