GT5 Friends List Problem.

Hello all.
A friend of mine has been added to my list. Its all confirmed in the XMB but, he is not appearing in my GT5 community list.
Whats going on? Do the GT5 servers need to sync or something? If so, what time does this happen.
I'm off for a while now. Any help or info is much appreciated.

Log out of gt mode, sign out of psn, sign back in then join GT mode
 
Tried that. Also tried deleting the cache and the cookies in the browser amongst other things. Do we both have to be playing it at the same time before the game acknowledges his existence?
Can anyone else help?
 
Sometimes it doesn't do it instantly, as said above, resetting doesn't work, I think it might have happened to me once
 
They only appear in your in game friends list AFTER they have played the game
 
He has played the game, earned a few trophies too.
I'll just have wait it out and see what happens.

There has to be a solution to this. Its driving me a bit mental.

Try deleting them and adding them again?
 
Thanks to all who tried to help. I think i've cracked it though.
He has just started the game, it turns out that he hasn't downloaded the update yet. What a plum.
