I'm loving the game, and I'm curious to know if you all would recommend GT4 as well. I know that I definitely like the color of the Formula GT better in GT4 videos I've seen, but honestly after a few clips the way the GT4 cars move in terms of reacting to the angle of the roads looks almost like a car on a stick, if that makes sense. Still, I'm guessing the game is probably very enjoyable so I'm curious if others would still recommend it at this point.

Call me crazy, but I'd actually recommend GT1 or GT2 instead. They have a "classic" feel that makes them so much more enjoyable. Since GT5 is your first, you may not get that same feeling, though.

Plus, GT1 has Special Stage Route 11. Not much more needs to be said.

Yeah, go for it ... it's really quite a good game. Sure, it might not have the physics or the graphics of GT5, but there's still a lot of great stuff in it, like the 1000 Miles! race.

Thanks for the info. I'm also very interested in the F-1 2010 game. Any comments regarding that one?

I wouldn't recommend it since GT5 is your first game. I bought GT4 a few months before GT5P was released and regretted it because it's just not upto scratch compared to games this generation. It may be big and contain a lot of cars and events, but its not very exciting. Only worth it if you get it for extremely cheap.

GT4 is worth getting for some of the great circuits that haven't been carried over to GT5 - Citta di Aria, Costa di Amalfi, El Capitan, Midfield Raceway, Seattle and a few others whose names escape me right now.

Nope, but there is a subforum.

I still have my PS1 wired up and occasionally get nostalgic and run some races on GT1. I still remember the day I got it and I thought, "Video gaming race will never get better than this, it's amazing!"
I too loved SSR 11. They left out so many good tracks that were in GT1-4. You would think they already have the code written for how those tracks are shaped, banked, contoured, etc. Just update the graphic covering, the hard part is done.

I don't see any point to playing a game as old as GT4. That was a great game for its time. Especially considering it would take a long time to get through gt4.

That's crazy talk! I still play Scramble and Berzerk on my 1982 Vectrex, and enjoy it as much as I did years and years ago. (Bonus points for people who know what a Vectrex is. 👍)

To answer the original question, if you enjoy GT5 I think you should definitely play the earlier games. If you can (and want to) start with GT1 and move up from there. I've been playing since the original, and I remember saying with everyone one "It can't get better than this!" yet somehow, everyone was better than the one before it. I think it is very interesting to see how the series has progresses. The earlier games have some awesome cars, and especially tracks that should've never been left out, and it is still very fun to play them. This is all my opinion, of course.

Right now at the stage I'm at in GT5 (level 15) I still prefer GT4. It doesn't have the looks and feel of GT5 but it has years of play value and as mentioned before, some great tracks not in GT5. I would recommend getting it if you manage to finish '5 anytime soon.

I think you should go for getting Gran Turismo 4. All the cars from GT4 are in GT5, however there are some really unique tracks in GT4 that never got imported and I overall enjoyed the events in GT4's career mode more than the ones in GT5. Plus the B Spec in GT4 was also more enjoyable. I'd also recommend you to get Gran Turismo 2! It had a more focus on simplicity and fun than trying to be perfect like the more recent Gran Turismo games.

Great responses, thanks!! I think I'll check on the used prices for GT4 at GameStop. Might end up being an affordable Christmas request. :)

I think people's memories are kinder than time. I booted up GT1 a few weeks back with dewy eyed nostalgia. As soon as I hit the track I baulked at the low resolution, AI, and terrible collision detection. I remember it graphically blowing away every PS1 game at the time when I got it on Japanese Import. But I certainty wouldn't play it preference to GT5 now.

One thing that is worthing having from this era: The Namco NeGcon (NOT the JogCon with the spinny wheel thing) - this was superb when you couldn't be bothered to setup the wheel and you just wanted a controller. The analogue buttons for throttle and brake had loads of travel. And the twisting motion of the steering was superb. In GT2 they introduced a huge deadzone to the middle for some reason, which killed the sensitivity of it.

GT4? Yep it was very good for the time. Local LAN play and multiscreen setup should be in GT5. Still wouldn't play it over GT5 though - the physics in particular or less 'organic' and less 'fun' than GT5.

No sir, I generally regularly play all the GT games. I play them all at least twice a week (obviously with GT5 taking up the majority) and while the older GT's certainly haven;t aged well, I find it very easy to look past that and enjoy them for what they are, and were.

I prefer GT5 over all the other GT's for the physics engine alone. I love GT5, but the only way I get to race at Red Rock or Grindlewald is on GT2, and I would absolutely love to be able to race on those tracks with GT5's physics. Unfortunately PD seems to have forgotten about them.

remember peobryant , if im not mistaken, Red Rock had the full 360turn like cape ring does now. when i first raced there i immediately thought cape-ring is an updated version of red rock.

GT2 feels like a fantastic arcade racer nowadays. I guess if you want the extra tracks in GT4, it could be worth it, but I think GT5 is only an improvement otherwise. Not enough difference to buy GT4 when you have GT5, imo.

GT2, though, is well worth it. And it's the last game that's really balanced with a controller in mind, not a wheel. PD should really get GT2 on the PSN.

GT2 is still my favourite racing game ever.

I highly recommend to get GT3 first. 👍 Because they got SSR11 track!!!! By the way, GT5 is my 4th Gran Turismo. :sly:

GT4 is in my opinion the best GT game ever. Even after 1000 of hours playing, im only 98% through (ok, most of the time, ive just grinded, but still). :P

While all the previous GTs were great games, for me its very difficult to go back and play 1-3 just due to the graghics being so inferior. GT4 with selectable 1080i output, makes the difference the most minimized, not to mention being the most in depth with A-spec points and many more events and tracks. Loved that 1000mis event. Wish GT5 had it along with more like it.

What happened to that track - id never appeared in a GT game later (did it?) - but it was quite challenging and therefore very interesting to drive...
It's a shame that is not in GT5... :(

It was remodelled and appeared in GT3, but it hasn't been seen since. Disappointing, since it's my favourite circuit - it just happens to be in the two games I don't own. I can't believe PD thought SSR7 was a better idea.

Aaaahhh yes...GT1 and SSR11 :) good times, goooood times.

I know PD brought back SSR11 on the PS2, but in my opinion it lost some of its originality compared to GT1. When you avoided the "block" at speed in GT1 it was a real feeeling of achievement (for me anyway!). It was so much more interesting than the revamped version.

Being they was both from the PS2, I can't imagine tracks from GT4 are too much ahead of GT3 in terms of quality. Returning tracks from GT4 such as Grand Valley, Trial Mountain etc are considered "standard" tracks.

With that being said, though unlikely, could it be a possibility we see SSR11 in DLC form down the road? I'm sure PD could do it. This is one track I'd damn near kill to have in GT5, regardless of quality.

I don't know about Puerto Rico, but around here you can pick up a PS2 and GT4 for the same price as GT5 itself!
Gamestop has PS2s for 40 USD and copies of GT4 for 20 USD and a new copy of GT5 costs 60 USD.
I was actually considering picking this up for the holidays, as my PS2 is long gone.

All I can say is... I dearly miss GT4. In terms of content comparisons, GT5 is shocking.

I recommend GT1 and GT2 ;)
