GT5 Marketplace Economics

So the game was released and from day one on this marketplace an new economy begins to emerge.

There's nothing better to understand an economy than to be there at the birth of a new one.

The values of paints, cars etc.. on the marketplace have been the subject of much conjecture on here, and now people are starting to post at the beginning of their shops the link to the thread showing the "new" glitch, just to get better deals on their stock.

And then we still have people moaning about cheaters. Give up, please. With a system set up socially in this way and with little synergy between PD and Sony, there will ALWAYS be ways to exploit the system.

The fact is these "exploits" often take a lot longer than winning games and is tediously boring so the fact still remains there will be people who do certain ones and those who don't and the economy is constantly changing as a result.

SO TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE POSTING IN MARKETPLACE THAT "TRADING IS MEANINGLESS" ......

.. please stop because trading is NOT meaningless. Everything on there still has and will always have a value.

And remember: without these so called "cheats" we wouldn't have been able to witness the blossoming of a brand new economy formed from nothing but hearsay, speculation and outright misinformation.

Thats what its all about folks - rarity & scarcity; and those people who try to distort the markets by screaming at the top of their lungs, "Trading is meaningless!"

I think paint still retains some value. Cars unfortunately don't.
 
"Special" paint has a value of $150k. Cut and dried. If you can get more then good for you, but expect less because people just get their own when they want it.

Most cars have some value... I assume the high end cars w/zero miles are all probably Bday glitched so that factors into what I'm willing to pay.

I think you guys might be missing my point: the only value something has is what the other person is willing to pay for it.

If I decide to sell something on ebay i search the same item and check completed listings to see how much they are going for. Of course it varies but when averaged you get the best possible valuation of your item.

Although Cheyenne you are exactly right about those factors. These are factors which determine the way the economy will vary from day to day. Another factor is speculation - when people start posting about how new glitches are going to make certain items cheaper, people panic and sell off those items. In our real world global economy this is highly illegal as you are manipulating the market.

Essentially a traders job in real life is to be on top of all information pertaining to any factors relating to their markets. This is why I love all the exploits in this game - because it has created these factors, such as the ones mentioned by Cheyenne, which are whats pushing the market to fluctuate day by day and people's opinions of "value" to change.

The point Im trying to make is that the value of ANYTHING in this world is what someone else is willing to pay for it. The price is entirely different, and it is because price is not a factor in GT5 Marketplace forum that its economy has been allowed to flourish in the way that it has, and continue to fluctuate within such a short space of time.
 
Trading is meaningFUL. It means I can finally complete my garage and get all the cars in the game. Sure I can dupe cars....but having 30 X1s sitting in my garage isn't going to help me. Through trading I can swap them for cars I need and also give somebody else a car they don't have.

Another great point.

If there is anyone in GT5 Marketplace who is trading just for the sake of trading then they need professional help - everyone on there has two things in common: they both have something and they both want something.

So although most people are currently looking to 'trade up', some are more than happy to 'trade down', and as time goes on the market will balance out and nobody can predict what the so-called "value" of things will be then.

That will happen because more and more people will advance through the game and then realize that racing 1000bhp race cars all the time isn't really all that thrilling, nor challenging, and will start trading their high spec cars for perhaps 2 or 3 lower spec cars.
 
I dont understand in getting a car so much that i need to trade off other cars to get ill wait my time for it to pop up in the used department or save and buy it is that not what the games about so everyones game is slightly diffrent in there own experience
 
I used to work 50 hours a week and bring home a meagre wage. Now, I've quit my job to trade GT5 cars full time. In 12 to 18 months i'll have enough to retire and buy all the fast cars and slow women I want!

Exactly. I love GT5 because it makes me work for my reward. The feeling of pride and satisfaction after you nail a difficult race and finally save up enough for that car you've been waiting for is second to none, and what makes GT5 the best racing sim out there.

If you use exploits to get cars, then fair enough, you play differently to me and I don't mind, but what I do know is that you'll never experience that amazing feeling. It's pretty rare in gaming and I recommend going for it, I've hung on to the series for over 10 years because of this :sly:
