Now if i do a full back-up via the PS3 system section and back-up onto an external Hdd, if in the future my PS3 either dies or the inbuilt Hdd dies will my back to external Hdd goe onto a new internal Hdd or even new machine if needed.

Thanks.

Security measures might stop users from doing that, at least that's what I read. Maybe Sony did change the matter.

A full back up means you can restore that data onto an existing / new hdd. The hdd with the backup on will not act as a direct replacement.

So as i see it the externall back-up can be loaded onto both a neww Hdd in current PS3 and also new PS3 if required.

Its the same principle as using a usb flash drive so yes.

Yes mate. Just use the PS3s restore facility and it should be fine. Backup your save file on a USB stick still though. The save file backup can be done regularly, and the hdd back up can be done monthly or every two weeks or so.
