GT5 Rally Challenge Easter Egg?

I'm playing back through my GT5 as I wait for GT7 to release. Today I was completing the Intermediate Challenge on Tuscany Tarmac and during the SS 5 race I came upon my 3 competitors driving in circles! Like some sort of synchronized merry go round they were circling in the middle of the road. Was this a humorous gift from the game designers?
 
Sounds like an AI bug more than anything, but I could be wrong. I enjoyed the rally events in GT5, but they always felt like an afterthought. Mediocre AI on randomly generated tracks is bound to create glitches in the system.

Maybe they were really bored and decided to let off some steam by breaking their programming xD
