The "Snake Pit" is not on the Road Course... But Snake Pit would be a great name for turn 13 in the image above!
The original Snake Pit was on the inside of turn 13, (Turn 1 of the Indy 500 layout) an area now closed to spectators both during races on the Road Course AND Indy 500 and NASCAR races. It was a general admission area well known for parties, lost tops and clothing, much more drinking than other areas of the track. Motorcycles, Mardi-Gras style madness and not paying much attention to the race was the norm. I recall being a teen in the 80's, sitting outside of turn 1 directly across from the Snake Pit, and seeing flashing going on. Arrests, fights, drug possession, etc happened every year. Think Woodstock but with engine sounds.
The large building on the left is a huge restroom. It's still there... Tradition is to bring a Sharpie Marker and write something somewhere, even today.
Daddy must be so proud!
It was not uncommon for CARS to be left behind in the 70's and 80's. In the 80's the Speedway erected some seating just East of the Snake Pit, as well as motorcycle parking, RV parking, a scoreboard and more in an effort to curtail the madness. Snake Pit II sprung up inside Turn 4 (Indy 500 layout) but was far less intense.
The Turn 4 Snake Pit II grounds were razed in 1999 for the Road Course. Inside turn 3 (Indy 500 layout - directly under marcus's username in the numbered turn layout above and nowhere near the road course) is the current official Snake Pit party area, but the scene now is nothing like it used to be. I've walked through the current one many times. Pretty tame due to security and the increased family atmosphere at the Speedway.m the Speedway does indeed call this area the Snake Pit today.
It is fabricated a bit, but can be fun
