Hi all, Over the weekend i had the YLOD whilst playing GT5 , tried all dodgy methods to fix the broken ps3 but to no avail so i have purchased a new slim Ps3 i then realised to my horror of trying to apply backup to the new hard drive GT5 is copy protected!!! NO ! ok i didnt have the largest collection of cars and i hadnt quite completed it all but i had a nice selection of what i had wanted to buy and even had a chome paint (1st one in whole of game ) in the bag but thought id wait for something special to use it on and its all gone!! This added to the 3.5 gig update that took place as i put the game in has all come as a large frustration but i suppose its all worth it for a great game!

Sorry my post goes on a bit

The game was fully updated! it cannot be passed from a back up usb and putting the old harddrive in the new ps3 requires a format as they appear to be encrypted to each console . but if your right then i obviously have just got unlucky

I run the same gamesave off two consoles at once, precisely because the save data is not copy protected nor console-locked.

It is locked to PS3 login name and PSN ID though.

I'm not entirely sure GT5 saves are locked to PS3 login names anymore - I've got a differently-named login on my girlfriend's PS3 that accepts my main GTP save. They both do use the same PSN account, so it might just need a match on that if it's a save that's used PSN at any point.

Did your main save have all the current updates? Did the backup? Answering no to either of those might be the reason.

I have a question which kind of fits in with this topic.

My 80GB PS3 finally kicked the bucket two nights ago. It will probably be awhile before I get another one so more updates will probably be out by then. The game save I have is for version 2.05. When I do upload the save data to the new PS3 should I update to 2.05, upload the save data, then download the rest of the updates?

Do all the updates first then put it on. A savegame from one version should always work on newer versions.

Cool...so it's now my turn to get the YLOD, on my 3.5-year-old phat PS3.

Anyway I managed to boot him up after several attempts, and data (includes GT5 progress) is currently being backed up on my external hard disk using the Backup Utility (monitor shows 2h 20mins remaining).

I plan to purchase a slim PS3 tomorrow but I intend to retain my 500gb hard disk which, from my understanding, will have to be formatted on the new PS3.

Question is, If I were to transfer the backed up data back into the formatted 500gb harddisk on the NEW PS3, will my GT5 data be successfully transferred?
As an additional precaution, I've also copied the GT5 gamesave into a thumbdrive.

From my understanding - you should be in the clear, though as mentioned above, make sure your PS3 username and PSN name are all the same as they were before, just to avoid any potential problems.

The important thing is you have the gamesave: if for whatever reason you can't get the old game data back, you'll lose out on replays, photos, and created tracks, and obviously the updates, but you should have everything else. I say all this with uncertainty since I haven't yet gone through it, but hopefully, someone can confirm :)

How many PS3's do you have tied to your name. We are limited to 3 systems now for game save sharing. Try log on in to your Sony Entertainment acct, same log in as PSN, and deactivating the PS3 that died.

Yup, once I've migrated to the new PS3, I'm definitely staying on the PSN account which I've used for GT5 the whole while. Basically, everything remains the same except the console.

SnakeEyes - The fat PS3 that died was my first PS3, so I've only got one system registered under my username at the moment. Looks like it might be a good idea to deactivate after I get my new one.

I'll keep you guys updated on the outcome of the data transfer and whether all data including replays, photos etc. gets trasnferred successfully.
Thanks for the advice!

A few days ago I tried copying my game save file into a friend's PS3 and it didn't work. I don't know what might be the problem since there is people who share the same file with various PS3.

What can I say... With the seasonals you'll get your collection back again in no time. Plus, it will be a lot of fun to start GT5 again.

Good luck.

The gamesave will only work on a different console if it's used with the same login credentials and same PSN account that it has been using on the first console.

Successfully transferred GT5 saves into a new PS3!

What I did:
1) Ran the Backup Utility on my then near-broken PS3 (fat) to back up data using an external hard disk.
2) Bought new PS3 (slim)
3) Updated new PS3 to latest firmware and ran Backup Utility, this time using the restore function to restore the data from my external hard disk to the new PS3

What I retained:
  • Most importantly, my 95% progress GT5 game save (in fact all game saves except copy-protected ones; to retain copy-protected saves, we should use Data Transfer utility instead of Backup Utility...attempted DTU but for some reason the stubborn PS3s refused cooperate. Anyway that belongs to a different thread...)
  • Replays
Not sure about photos because I never took a single photo, but I believe they would be intact

What I lost...temporarily:
Basically DLC
  • Cars from DLC packs (Car names still exist in garage)
  • Stealth GTR and NSX (Car names still exist in garage)
  • Collector's Edition Chrome line cars (Car names still exist in garage)
  • Spa circuit
  • Speed test course
However, these can be found under the downloads list in my PSN, so I managed to redownload them without any problems.

...and Voila!
